With just over a week to go until the release of their official debut album “Everything 050” on 4th August, Newark trio Riq da Kid, Tru Trilla and Prince AK – aka 050 Boyz – sat down with Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer Stranga the Great to chop it up about their history, the album and the New Jersey scene

In this new “On The Rise” feature, the group who all first picked up the mic during the Golden Era discuss the history of hip hop in the Garden State and their own connection to Queen Latifah’s Flavor Unit, the sound that defines them and their own influences coming up, their immediate plans with the album and finish by addressing recent high profile racial issues affecting the USA including the removal of the confederate flag, attacks on black churches and police brutality

Yesterday they launched a new joint “Watch That (Bricks Mix)”, a remix from their back catalogue which is already getting a lot of air time. Check out the stream on Soundcloud

Expect to see a lot more international media coverage in the weeks ahead together with more audio and video releases. The group will also be DJ Eclipse’s guests twice next month. First on Wednesday 12th August on The Halftime Show on WNYU and then later in the month on Sunday 30th August for his Rap Is Outta Control Show on Sirius XM.

You will also be able to catch 050 Boyz perfoming live at Newark’s Lincoln Park Festival this Sunday, 26th July. Their live shows are always big on energy and definitely worth seeing if you’re in the area. Expect a fuel injected version of what’s represented in their “Hot Damn” video!

The album is true to its name, 0-50 being the area code for New Jersey, with many features from local artists including Treach, DoItAll, Ib the Druid, Famiil, Lakim Shabazz, B Wells & Tha Advocate. Production is by Clinton Place (DJ Jamal#9), Prince AK’s long time associate from the days where the pair performed live with Supreme C.

Couple weeks back, The Beeshine made the short trip over from Jersey City to Newark to hook up with Riq da Kid, Tru Trilla and Prince AK, aka 050 Boyz.

As part of their “What Inspires…” series, the online tv channel spoke with the hip hop group about their early inspirations and what inspires them now, their own history, and their new album “Everything 050” which releases on 4th August

In this video, the group talk about early influences and inspirations with a particular acknowledgement of the role played by the success of local artists such as Naughty by Nature and Lords of the Underground (who they’d go on to work with), Redman, Queen Latifah and how they in turn now look to provide an example to others.

They discuss how watching live performances by Slick Rick & Doug E Fresh and hearing the music of MC Shan, Sugarhill Gang, Teddy Prendergast, Smokey Robinson, in their earlier years also acted as a major motivation

The mindset of inspiring and promoting new generations from the Garden State and shining a light on other local independent artists can be traced back to their involvement in Treach’s Garden State Greats Movement of 2004, and represented now by the inclusion of many as featured guests on the album.

They also look back on their own progression through the years from producing mixtapes, releasing videos and grindin on the streets to now reaching out globally and developing their own entertainment company which again they hope will benefit those on the come up in future. The appreciation of family and community support is clear as is their intention to reciprocate.

The group explain the dynamic of working as three MC’s with distinct styles, and how the creative process and interaction with the crowd at shows is both a cathartic and powerful experience. Prince AK then speaks about his role as hype man for Treach’s Naughty Nation and touring with them in China, before the interview concludes by addressing the album itself

New Jersey hip hop trio 050 Boyz release their new album “Everything 050” on 4th August.

Produced by long time associate Clinton Place, it also features many of the best Garden State Emcees pitching the street side by side with established names such as Treach from Naughty by Nature and DoItAll from Lords of the Underground.

Prince AK, Riq da Kid and Tru Trilla have earned the medals in the local scene throughout the years whether as members of groups or with their solo careers, and were involved with the Garden State Greats movement devised by Treach and Fam of Rottin Razkals back in the day. With initial assistance from DoItAll, the group regenerated the concept of unifying and representing Jersey hip hop while forming in the past couple of years, and the nature of the album is testament to this aim

They sat down recently with US online Straight Fresh to chop it all up. They discussed their years in the game and working with some of the best known names to come from the area, their thoughts on hip hop, influences, Jersey hip hop, their aims with the new album and much more

New Jersey trio, Prince AK, Tru Trilla and Riq tha Kid, aka 050 Boyz, travelled a long and diverse road to form as a group in 2011.

With individual histories spanning back a couple of decades, the story of 050 Boyz who take their name from the NJ district code is one of careers intertwining at various stages throughout the years. Most notably as part of the Garden State Greats movement inspired by Treach (Naughty by Nature) & Fam (Rottin Razcals) in 2004, a concept which was re-generated by Lords of the Underground front man DoItAll some years later.

Added to the mix are tv & film acting careers, ongoing solo careers and now a banging new hip hop album produced entirely by Clinton Place (Yukmouth, Kurupt, DoItAll and Gillahouse’s Runt Dawg)
