veteran-okthomag

The “Veteran” EP released on November 18th was the first official collaborative project by NY State rapper Tone Chop and Winnipeg based producer Frost Gamble.

This despite the fact the pair were originally rivals in Binghamton’s rap battle scene during the 90’s who would then go on to be partners in rhyme, tagging and remained hip hop allies over the years.

bckbrdr

Though continuing to collaborate on occasional tracks, the pair pursued solo careers especially in the light of Frost’s relocation and subsequent re-focus on production. This led them to work individually with artists such as Tom Gist, J-Ro, Sadat-X, Jinx da Juvy and Rakim’s son Tahmell, however it was Frost’s contribution to Seven 13’s “God Bless Dope Rappers” compilation earlier this year which was the catalyst for the new EP

Also released through Seven 13 Music & Ent, “Veteran” is a warm up to a new album planned for 2017, and includes the single “Leave It Alone” featuring Ruste Juxx, a tribute to Sean Price.

The latest review comes courtesy of The Dynamic JAB, writing for OK-Tho Magazine. READ THE FULL APPRAISAL HERE

The EP is available to buy from iTunes

Omerta-StreetsConnect

In the past few weeks, rapper M.I. from eastcoast hip hop duo Constant Deviants jumped on the phone to westcoast publication Streets Connect Magazine.

In what was an in depth conversation, many subjects were addressed meaning the resultant interview being published in two parts.

The first of these has M.I. going deep into the concept behind the group’s new album “Omerta” which released on June 28th, the production process, and the various inspirations that contributed to its ultimate naissance. This naturally leads the discussion on to his thoughts on the art of songwriting in hip hop today, and the group’s approach to a new project with the emphasis placed on a cohesive construction rather than random beats and bars.

DB2

The Baltimore MC gives an example of writing for a female audience, citing the approach of Mobb Deep, Pete Rock, CL Smooth and Gangstarr to underline the point, and it takes the interview back to the days of when the group first started, the progression from battle raps to the art of storytelling, and the release of their debut single “Competition Catch Speed Knots

Interesting insight to the mindset, and you can read the entire feature HERE

DLa

Look out for Part 2 of the interview being published very shortly, and the final episode of their Tre Volte freestyle video series releasing next week when M.I. will also have his new movie “Six2Six” screened at the Hip Hop Film Festival in Harlem.

Co:ordinated by Ralph McDaniels, it will be shown at 8.30pm on Friday August 5th at the National Black Theater in Harlem, and co:stars Treach, Syleena Johnson and Chief Rocker Busy Bee.

“Omerta” is available to buy as a digital download HERE and is being distributed worldwide by Fatbeats in CD and vinyl formats. Keep up to date with Constant Deviants on social media via Facebook (Group & Label) and Twitter (Group & Label) and meantime check out the album stream

Constant Deviants_v3

During their recent visit to NYC to promote the new album “Omerta”, M.I. and DJ Cutt of Constant Deviants caught up with Rapstation’s Tim Einenkel in Brooklyn to talk through a number of subjects

They discuss the concept behind the album, and the metaphorical role playing element adopted via the personas of Lucky Luciano and Meyer Lansky. They delve deep into the specific thought process involved and differentiate between a perceived “mafiosa rap” approach to one which juxtaposes circumstances of four people with identical heritages.

AOW

The discussion moves to the duo’s writing and recording process, comparing when they formed in Brooklyn to the current dynamic of operating from Baltimore and New Jersey. Appropriately at this point they talk more about their back catalogue and explain why they still give priority to producing an album as a cohesive body of work.

DJCutt

DJ Cutt then speaks more on his overall approach to production, how he determines the feel for a record and the various musical genres he sources for samples. Giving his thoughts on the diversion hip hop and rap has taken over the years, he suggests his own style is born of “tunnel vision”

MI2

Meanwhile M.I. explains why very few artists have had any longlasting influence on him, instead outlining his alternative sources of inspiration, and speaks on the broader issue of differing approaches to “the art of rhyme” through each generation.

Ending with their thoughts on the best scene from “Goodfellas”, the interview can be listened to in full via the AUDIO STREAM

989oa

The album is available to buy as a digital download from Six2Six Records BANDCAMP while CD and vinyl formats are being distributed worldwide by Fatbeats from July 15th.

ATM-OnTheComeUpTV

West coast rappers Horseshoe Gang jumped on Skype recently with UK journalist Thomas Schofield shortly after the release of their new album “Anti-Trap Music”.

Interviewing the group for London’s On The Come Up TV, they spoke about the earliest days and the transformation from The Untouchable Gang to their present moniker and their establishment within the COB movement.

They spoke about issues they feel they sometimes face in networking with other artists, and how they view the modern day version of rap battles, especially in light of their own well documented response to Funk Volume’s $500,000 challenge last year.

The interview concludes with the theme of the album title and how the group want to help inform the younger generations of traditional hip hop values in a modern context, and use the best of the old and the new to help push the culture forward

CD-TheBeeshine

Filmed on 12th May 2015, the actual day of release of their fourth album “Avant Garde”, Constant Deviants sat down with The Beeshine in New York while they were in town for a series of media and radio interviews.

For fans of the group, this footage is also a bit of a collectors item as both Emcee M.I…no it’s not DeNiro in Raging Bull ;)…and DJ Cutt discuss a variety subjects from their history, rarer than some of the 12″‘s in Cutt’s crates!!!

IMG_7195ba

They talk about their very earliest days getting into music, M.I. explaing his family’s musical background and Cutt reflecting on the days of Red Alert on Kiss and hearing LL Cool J’s “Rock the Bells” for the first time.

Moving on to first performing, M.I. recalls the days of hip hop culture first arriving with breakdancin crews and the first freestyle sessions at a record store in Baltimore’s Saratoga Street, while Cutt reveals all about destroying his father’s turntable trying to scratch for the first time, then saving up lunch money to get his first decks….without a mixer….

However it was the progression for both to NY state, with Cutt at school for music engineering that the two met in the 90’s and performed together for the first time at college parties.

cd 5

The pivotal point came with the release of their first 12″ Competition Catch Speed Knots, and Cutt reveals he still has a picture of DJ Premier buying a copy at Beat Street. M.I. explains his development from initially a battle rap style delivery to a writer of reality rhymes, and both speak about the benefits they’ve enjoyed of travelling to Europe, learning business skills from the industry and how they’d like to be considered in years to come.

WATCH THE FULL INTERVIEW

At the time of this interview, they were also guests of Smokin Aces and DJ Bazarro on Beatminerz Radio, and meeting with DJ Evil Dee again after many years ultimately led to Da Beatminerz remixing Constant Deviants most recent single “End All Be All”.
