Following the phenomenal international response to his debut album “Magna Carta” which released on 3rd December, Melanin 9 has just launched the final video from this project “Heartless Island” featuring his long time sparring partners Triple Darkness with production courtesy of Jehst

Just as with previous joints Organized Democracy and DJ Magazine’s Hip Hop Single of the Month “White Russian” ft Roc Marciano, this is another banger with all artists on top of their lyrical game over a slammin beat.

Melanin 9 has just released the vinyl version of Magna Carta, and has been busy in the studio recording new projects including a new track with Planet Asia. He has several live appearances coming up including a performance at London’s iLuvLive at the end of May, and featuring on the main stage at the UK’s Boom Bap Festival in September.

The Voice Newspaper is a well known publication in London which has run from 1982, and has been regularly voted “Britain’s Best Black Newspaper” for their coverage on a range of issues specific to the community including sport, current affairs, education, lifestyle, faith, career opportunites and entertainment.

The papers’s Hazel Ann Williams took a trip up to Islington recently to interview one of the hottest emerging figures in the UK hip hop scene, melanin 9, to discuss his new album Magna Carta, his early days of starting out as an artist and his views on hip hop generally today.

There has been a tremendous amount of media coverage on Magna Carta in the UK primarily, and also in Europe and the United States since the promotional campaign began in the autumn of 2012. Another review of UK hip hop MC Melanin 9’s album “Magna Carta” which released on 3rd December 2012.

This one had slipped under the radar until today, but first published in January 2013, online magazine Stereoboard reviewer Jonny Rimmer has given this a massive vote of approval

Opening up with an overview of the shifts taking place right now in the UK scene, with more people switching attention to the “hip hop” community, he opens :

“There are significant changes afoot in the world of UK hip hop. With grime is on the way out, and its established heads like Wiley and Dizzee Rascal moving towards poppy pastures new, hip hop is again gaining popularity in cities all over the UK. The battle scene is also making waves with Don’t Flop boasting now one of the biggest battle-league fanbases on the planet. Most tangibly though, there is a real sense that hip hop is now a real voice for young people seeking change – see the recently retired Lowkey and Logic’s ‘People’s Army’; M9 also fits this mould.”

This is then followed by the opening salvo in relation to the album itself :

“However, one cannot stress enough just how much of an accomplishment Magna Carta is. For starters, it sounds very little like a British album at all, snubbing garage for the sort of slow, meditative beats that you’d find on 90s noir records like Mobb Deep’s The Infamous. And the mood it establishes is gorgeous, with jazzy trumpets, saxophone and piano samples forming the backdrop to M9’s bleak urban narratives. Even though there are several different producers here, all of them match M9’s vision, tailoring their ideas to the MC’s aesthetic vision.”

Latest in what has been a long line of UK and international media coverage secured by UrbanElite PR for London’s Melanin 9 and his debut album “Magna Carta” which released on 3rd December 2012.

“Magna Carta is embedded with hyper-visual lyricism, dark soundscapes, gritty narratives, and hard beats, and really gives the impression that Melanin 9 is out to spread knowledge.”

Melanin 9’s launch night for his new album “Magna Carta” took place at The Vibe Bar in London’s Brick Lane in late November, and the venue was rammed full with the city’s hip hop fraternity there to see him joined by Choice FM’s DJ 279, Genesis Elijah, Rewd Adams, Iron Braydz, and his Triple Darkness sparring partners Cyrus Malachi and Phoenix da Icefire.

There was also a healthy media turnout, included in their numbers Snehal Shah from Live Magazine which publishes online and in physical print and covers a broad range of lifestyle subjects targeted at the youth market

In the January edition of DJ Magazine in UK stores now, the Hip Hop Singles Reviews page places Melanin 9’s “White Russian” featuring Roc Marciano as their “Money Shot Single of the Month”

Written by the magazine’s Neil Kulkarni :

“So pleased M9 is finally making the leap from mixtapes (if you ain’t heard High Fidelity or 144,000 you ain’t been reading this page enough!) to actually releasing an official album : this is the first single from “Magna Carta” and is just astonishing. A slow burning groove over which RM drapes some engrossing rhymes, crepuscular keys and smoky cymbals riding the groove deep intro your cortex. Essential”

They discuss his new album “Magna Carta”, what acts as his main motivations, his thoughts on hip hop generally and the journalist picks up on his approach to writing :

“If you haven’t guessed by now, Melanin 9 is not your average ‘money cash hoes’ type of spitter. His name alludes to the fact that he has a deeper way of thinking than your average guy on the corner……

Speaking of genius, I think there was a hint of that going on during the composition of Magna Carta. The LP has a throwback ‘diggin’ in the crates’ kind of vibe; so if you are bored of the monotonous computer generated sounds around, you’ll love the jazzy soulful tones and ‘real hip hop’ beats that M9 flows effortlessly over…..

If you are into British hip hop, this guy should definitely be on your playlist. Melanin 9 already has a solid international fanbase and I can only see Magna Carta helping the numbers to increase.”
