Barely 5 months since relaunching after a 15 year hiatus, hip hop label New Dawn Records have been busy expanding their operation.

In the Spring they released a number of digital singles and EP’s by Belles in Monica and Underground Cartel having signed a distribution agreement with US company Ingrooves for that format.

However with a history of releasing vinyl and also with an eye to the future in relation to upcoming signing news, NDR have developed the facility to take orders from the public and retail directly from any location worldwide and are now shipping to several destinations.

They have begun with the limited remaining stock from their back catalogue, the original rare & classic Belles in Monica 12″ singles “Y’All Under Surveillance”, “Meltdown”, “What D’Ya Need” & “Smoke Filled Rooms b/w Skitzophonetic” all in mint condition, 200 gram. The short video on Youtube has just been made to demonstrate the prime condition of their stock and includes track listings and audio snippets of each single .

The singles include remixes by Phi Life Cypher producer DJ Nappa, legendary turntablist & II Tone Committee producer Krash Slaughta, renowned London duo Unsung Heroes, DMC finalst DJ Mr Thing and more.

Many of the tracks were included in the group’s specially formatted digital releases “Y’All in Meltdown” and “Natsukashii” and can be heard on Soundcloud & Spotify.

The label have launched a store on their official website. Easy to use, various standard offers and discounts are quoted although they can be contacted regarding availability for any quantity. Currency exchange rate information is also provided and payments are secured via Paypal.

Omerta-StreetsConnect

In the past few weeks, rapper M.I. from eastcoast hip hop duo Constant Deviants jumped on the phone to westcoast publication Streets Connect Magazine.

In what was an in depth conversation, many subjects were addressed meaning the resultant interview being published in two parts.

The first of these has M.I. going deep into the concept behind the group’s new album “Omerta” which released on June 28th, the production process, and the various inspirations that contributed to its ultimate naissance. This naturally leads the discussion on to his thoughts on the art of songwriting in hip hop today, and the group’s approach to a new project with the emphasis placed on a cohesive construction rather than random beats and bars.

DB2

The Baltimore MC gives an example of writing for a female audience, citing the approach of Mobb Deep, Pete Rock, CL Smooth and Gangstarr to underline the point, and it takes the interview back to the days of when the group first started, the progression from battle raps to the art of storytelling, and the release of their debut single “Competition Catch Speed Knots

Interesting insight to the mindset, and you can read the entire feature HERE

DLa

Look out for Part 2 of the interview being published very shortly, and the final episode of their Tre Volte freestyle video series releasing next week when M.I. will also have his new movie “Six2Six” screened at the Hip Hop Film Festival in Harlem.

CD-Hype

A few weeks ago, Emcee M.I. from Constant Deviants sat down with journalist Roberta Lampley, and the subsequent feature published in The Hype Magazine takes an in depth look into how the group operates in the greater context of life as an independent.

The duo released their fourth studio album “Avant Garde” on 12th May through Six2Six Records, a label M.I. co-owns and runs. The interview delves deeper into the group’s earlier days and touches upon their time with major labels Arista and Roc-A-Fella before returning to the independent fold and beginning their own label.

ConstantDeviants

They discuss their marketing strategy with a brand very much rooted in the traditional Golden Era but with a modern day approach, the rise in vinyl sales, the importance of physical product and how they developed an overseas presence particularly in Europe. The theme in the interview is the wealth of experience M.I. has from his two decades in hip hop having seen the industry on both sides of the Major / Indie coin. The knowledge is likely to be useful to all artists and labels starting up today.

They finish by talking about the new album, how it was devised and how it represents a duo with an almost symbiotic understanding of each other that produces, as the journalist writes, a feel from start to finish of “a cypher with your DJ, and the DJ kept changing the beats“.

For fans of Constant Deviants and those with an interest in the mechanics of operating as an independent artist or label in what would be classified as “real hip hop” today, the interview makes for excellent reading.
