Earlier this week, eastcoast rapper & producer duo Tone Chop & Frost Gamble jumped on Skype to speak with Rainbow Exotic Music for the latest edition of their podcast.

The pair discussed the earliest days together growing up in NY state which included a period as rap battle rivals, and their earliest influences, citing names such as Diamond D, Lord Finesse, Pete Rock, LL Cool J and The Beatnuts as helping shape their initial approach.

They then speak about the concept behind their new album “Respect Is Earned Not Given” and Chop provides an insight into the working relationship with featured artists Kool G Rap and DNA. The subject then moves on to the comparisons between the classic style of hip hop with some of today’s contemporary mainstream offshoots, the differentials in marketplaces and focus on lyical content, as Chop declares his wish for “mumble rap” to be re-categorized seperately from the genre!

Chop is then asked to give his thoughts on Jay-Z’s new album “4:44”, and as a fan of Hova he gives an interesting view of his overall body of work since the release of “Reasonable Doubt”. Meanwhile, as the pair discuss the logistics of recording together, Frost explains his move from traditional to contemporary crate digging techniques using the MPC, S900 and Tempest as part of the production process.

Released on May 26th, the hip hop album “Black Beach” by Detroit rapper ZotheJerk and eastcoast producer Frost Gamble has received plaudits by international publications for its intelligent social commentary addressing many aspects of life in today’s “Black America”.

This is not however just a barrage of protest anthems, but balances political issues with messages of hope, aspiration and the importance of providing the next generation with positive paternal role models, as witnessed in the duo’s most recent lyric video “Keep Me Safe”.

The album has also received praise for the production provided by Frost Gamble, who utilises a mix of soul, hip hop and electronica to reflect the mood swings, resulting in a perfect musical backdrop for the various themes.

The latest review published by Patrick Griffin on his personal blog encompasses both aspects. While affording the album an 8.5 rating, the article includes Zo’s in depth video interview with “The Underground Hip Hop”, and can be read HERE

In this section, he also provides his own perspective of Proof’s humerous nature including anecdotes from direct experience, and the devastating effect his passing had on the wider community.

He also addresses a variety of topics including the ability to balance family life with career, offers advice on how to break the “dead beat job cycle”, and of course gives an insight into the political and social issues tackled in his new album “Black Beach” which released on Friday May 26th produced entirely by Frost Gamble.
