In May this year, ZotheJerk released his album “Black Beach” through 22 Entertainment, a collaboration with producer Frost Gamble which included guest featured artists Sadat X, Guilty Simpson, Boldy James and KXNG Crooked.

Orginally from Detroit where among other things he appeared in the film “8 Mile” and developed a working relationship with the late Proof of D12, he subsequently moved to Kansas where he recived a “Humanitarian of the Year” award for work in the community before currently settling in Ohio.

Known for a conscious rhyming approach encompassing all aspects of life, injected with passion and humour in equal measure, he described the concept of “Black Beach” as “the voice of a people who are tired and demand more, who ask what’s next, it’s the music of the current era”

He sat down recently with US online magazine Rhymebeat to discuss his earliest influences and the creative inspirations in his writing, he spoke of his time on the come up at Detroit’s renowned “Hip Hop Shop” and discussed in more detail his move to Kansas and his thoughts on the wider Midwest rap scene.

Eastcoast rapper / producer duo Tone Chop & Frost Gamble released their album “Respect Is Earned Not Given” in September featuring Kool G Rap, Planet Asia, DNA and Tragedy Khadafi.

While in NYC last month they appeared as guests of DJ Eclipse on his Sirius XM “Rap Is Outta Control Show” a few days before Frost released his “Rare Fabric” EP with Tragedy Khadafi and his remix of the Kid Vishis single “Go Off” featuring Royce da 5’9″.

For the benefit of anyone who temporarily left the planet in the last 24 hours, NY State rapper & producer duo Tone Chop and Frost Gamble released their new album “Respect Is Earned Not Given” yesterday through Miami label 22 Entertainment.

Given the pair started out in the late 90’s, it’s unsurprising that their style draws from the core principles of that era while not being stuck in it – a focus on meaningful rhymes and flow skills, battle bars mixed with the art of storytelling. The polished production fuses classic and contemporary sounds with a sprinkling of turntablism which in itself is an almost forgotten artform.

It’s inaccurate to apply labels such as old or new school to the genre generally as that depends on context and perspective. For Millenials who have been largely force fed a diet of bland, superficial, commercialised mediocrity passing itself off as culturally progressive – backed by a mainstream media who’ll literally say & write everything and anything to stay ‘on message’ and retain a writing gig – then Chop & Frost’s style IS new school to that generation.

Frost has a new album with old NY State sparring partner Tone Chop releasing on September 29th.

“Respect Is Earned Not Given” includes guest feature artists Planet Asia, online rap battling sensation DNA, Tragedy Khadafi (with whom Frost is recording a new album), Canadian upcomer White Rhino, and on the first single “Walk the Walk” releasing June 30th, the legendary Kool G Rap.

The new album is the follow up to the pair’s critically acclaimed EP “Veteran” released in November 2016 which included the single “Leave It Alone”, a tribute to the late Sean P ft Ruste Juxx and Nobi.

Having just released their new EP “Veteran” on November 18th, NY State rapper Tone Chop and producer Frost Gamble, now relocated to Winnipeg, sat down with US online publication The Underground Hip Hop

In the new feature the pair discuss their earliest days and inspirations, and give the reasons why the new EP is a landmark in their careers to date. Having originally met at rap battles during the 90’s, the duo speak about longevity and determination as independent artists, and how they see their brand of hip hop sitting in future in such a diverse marketplace.

Upstate NY rapper Tone Chop & Winnipeg based producer released their new EP “Veteran” yesterday through Seven 13 Music & Entertainment. Available to buy from iTunes

Despite the distance apart, they’ve been long time allies dating back to an original rap battle rivalry during the 90’s which would then develop into a working partnership. While focusing on solo careers over the past decade, the pair occasionally collaborated on one off projects, however “Veteran” marks their first official release together, a warm up for an album due in 2017.

Online publication Above Average Hip Hop ran the rule over the new EP in the review written by Riley Wallace published yesterday.

Baltimore rapper M.I. and New Jersey producer DJ Cutt, aka Constant Deviants, released their fifth studio album “Omerta” digitally on June 28th through Six2Six Records.

It is being distributed worldwide on CD and vinyl formats by Fatbeats, and is due in stores from next week.

They have just released their third single from the album. “Reign Storms” was written in the aftermath of the death of Freddie Gray at the hands of Baltimore Police officers, all the more poignant now due to the well documented tragic events of recent weeks.

Quite clearly, black lives matter, as indeed do all lives.
