Earlier this week, eastcoast rapper & producer duo Tone Chop & Frost Gamble jumped on Skype to speak with Rainbow Exotic Music for the latest edition of their podcast.

The pair discussed the earliest days together growing up in NY state which included a period as rap battle rivals, and their earliest influences, citing names such as Diamond D, Lord Finesse, Pete Rock, LL Cool J and The Beatnuts as helping shape their initial approach.

They then speak about the concept behind their new album “Respect Is Earned Not Given” and Chop provides an insight into the working relationship with featured artists Kool G Rap and DNA. The subject then moves on to the comparisons between the classic style of hip hop with some of today’s contemporary mainstream offshoots, the differentials in marketplaces and focus on lyical content, as Chop declares his wish for “mumble rap” to be re-categorized seperately from the genre!

Chop is then asked to give his thoughts on Jay-Z’s new album “4:44”, and as a fan of Hova he gives an interesting view of his overall body of work since the release of “Reasonable Doubt”. Meanwhile, as the pair discuss the logistics of recording together, Frost explains his move from traditional to contemporary crate digging techniques using the MPC, S900 and Tempest as part of the production process.

AOW

They dissect the new album “Omerta”, addressing the various concepts, production techniques and lyricism that all went into the make up of the release. The nature of the interview acts as a real 360 not only in relation to Constant Deviants, but also as an insight into the workings of independent hip hop over the past couple of decades.

Once the interview concludes, DJ Toshi fires up the decks and M.I. goes in on a freestyle. The show is broadcast on Germany’s BM Radio every Sunday and then on Radio Hip Hop every Thursday. Listen back on DJ Toshi’s own podcast

Well, it’s not often you get a genuinely good laugh doing this job, but just occasionally something turns up…..

Earlier this week, MC M.I. from Constant Deviants jumped on the phone with DJ D-Money, host of the weekly Fresh Juice Radio Show based out of Washington State.

The pair began by discussing the group’s new album “Omerta” which releases on June 28th, and then moved on to the rapper’s new additional focus of movie making. As co:owner of Six2Six Records, M.I. has become more involved in acting, film writing and film production, and has set up a new subsidiary Six2Six Films.

MI2

A new movie “Six2Six” will be screened at Ralph McDaniels’ Hip Hop Film Festival in NYC during August, and co:starring with M.I. is Treach (Naughty by Nature), Syleena Johnson and Chief Rocker Busy Bee. Some of the plot line is explained before the Baltimore MC reveals he is near completion of another new film, this time a comedy, called “Can’t Live Without My Radio”.

Then comes a regular section of the show where rappers play the radio version of the board game “What?”. Among the questions asked are “What do dogs think when owners dress them up in clothes?” and “What would you legalize?”

We’ll just leave that there and you can have a listen to what he says……enjoy…..

You can listen back to the whole show on Fresh Juice’s Mixcloud

You’ll be able to hear the pair on radio again when they’re in NYC during the last week of June at the time of the album’s release, appearing on stations including Sirius XM, Beatminerz Radio, Bodega Cold Kutz and Classic Storm. Meantime, keep up to date with news about Constant Deviants on twitter @Cnstnt_Dvnts (label @Six2SixShift) or over on their Facebook Page

Microphone Masters Radio is broadcast in stream / podcast format every Wednesday through the DubCnn network.

Last week, the show’s host J-Luv sat down with Julius, Demetrius, Kenny & Dice from Horseshoe Gang to discuss their new album “Anti-Trap Music” which releases on April 29th through Seven 13 Music & Entertainment.

During the interview, the group clarified their take on the trap music genre and the discussion progressed onto the issue of retaining lyrical integrity, and how remaining true to these ideals can be maintained using commercial productions.

They then moved on to the frustrations faced by many artists in the modern age, the prevelant expectation of multiple back to back releases. The oversaturation of the internet where quantity has replaced quality has become an issue in recent times, and has created an apparent obligation on artists to consistently produce new material and make available for free.

IMG_1023

The interview wraps up with the group addressing the net grind / financial gain factor, the life sacrifices that have to be made to pursue a musical career and their call to radio stations to sit emerging and established artists side by side on the basis of quality and not budgets.

Interesting insight to which many will relate. The full feature was published on DubCnn where you can hear the full stream of the show which also includes tracks by E-40, Brotha Lynch Hung, J-Live, Grand Puba, Big Boi and more HERE

This is the stream of the Horseshoe Gang interview including several of their joints, old and new, played on the show

Horseshoe Gang will be performing with their elder brother KXNG Crooked at Los Globos, Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles tomorrow night, Friday 26th February. Doors open at 8pm, and all details of the full line up and ticket information is HERE

French DJ J Hart has built close ties with NYC and the UK over the years, and broadcasts his Big Bang Show on Break London Radio every Friday at 3pm EST / 8pm GMT (www.breaklondon.org)

His guests on his show broadcast on 4th September 2015 were New Jersey MCs Riq da Kid, Tru Trilla & Prince AK – collectively known as 050 Boyz

The show opened with some quality turntablism by J Hart, as he cut and blended the group’s tracks DNA (ft Ib the Druid, Fam & Treach), Hot Damn, current single Concrete Combat (ft Dunn D, Big Stomp, Double O & Fly Kwa) and Pay Them No Mind (ft Do It All & Tha Advocate)

050-NewPic3a

The interview started by the group explaining the concept behind the album “Everything 050” (available HERE) and the group’s name, and the importance of representing their home territory of Brick City Newark, Illtown, East Orange & Essex County.

The album features many established and upcoming artists from the wider Garden State scene, and is produced entirely by another local, Clinton Place

050-LincolnParkFestival

They then moved on to discuss performing at festivals in Brooklyn & Newark, signing a new management deal and the effect that has for independent artists such as themselves, before the interview turned to the highly publicised situation regarding their live dj, DJ Nugget (aka Marcus Jeter).

He was the subject of a huge ABC News Investigators story which resulted in two police officers being indicted for falsifying evidence and one for assault.

While for legal reasons the group could only provide a limited comment about the incident, the interview did move to the more general ongoing issues of police brutality and killings of those within the balck community which gave rse to the emergence of the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

The interview then concluded with the trio outlining their future plans for videos and tours of the USA and Europe, and then answered the show’s regular final question “What Is Your definition of Hip Hop?”
