At the start of January, Los Angeles’ hip hop artist Malkovich hit the new year running by releasing his new free album “Great Expectations”

Packed full of bangers courtesy of production by Leggo, Evildewer, Josh The Goon, Clan Destined’s Yamin, Becoming Phill and features including Gotham Green & Micah McKee, the wordplay, beats and lyricism is a treat for all connoisseurs of the traditional hip hop sound.

UK online magazine Hit The Floor have just reviewed the album.

Melanin 9’s launch night for his new album “Magna Carta” took place at The Vibe Bar in London’s Brick Lane in late November, and the venue was rammed full with the city’s hip hop fraternity there to see him joined by Choice FM’s DJ 279, Genesis Elijah, Rewd Adams, Iron Braydz, and his Triple Darkness sparring partners Cyrus Malachi and Phoenix da Icefire.

There was also a healthy media turnout, included in their numbers Snehal Shah from Live Magazine which publishes online and in physical print and covers a broad range of lifestyle subjects targeted at the youth market

In the January edition of DJ Magazine in UK stores now, the Hip Hop Singles Reviews page places Melanin 9’s “White Russian” featuring Roc Marciano as their “Money Shot Single of the Month”

Written by the magazine’s Neil Kulkarni :

“So pleased M9 is finally making the leap from mixtapes (if you ain’t heard High Fidelity or 144,000 you ain’t been reading this page enough!) to actually releasing an official album : this is the first single from “Magna Carta” and is just astonishing. A slow burning groove over which RM drapes some engrossing rhymes, crepuscular keys and smoky cymbals riding the groove deep intro your cortex. Essential”

The coverage of Melanin 9’s debut album “Magna Carta” continues into 2013.

Released on the 3rd December, it was one of the most written about UK hip hop albums of 2012, and the latest instalment is via James Savundra for London’s online platform I Am Music TV

Here he combines a review with an interview, with the London emcee speaking on putting the album together, the inspiration for the subject matter & writing process, selection of featured artists and the reasons behind there only being a relatively limited number and his plans for the new year.

The review itself is in depth and acknowledges the subject matter covered, the personal nature of the album and the skills on display as you’ll see from the introduction :

“Magna Carta should come with a warning. If you think you’ve copped yourself an easy-listening, stereotypical hip-hop album, then I’d advise you to return it. Brace yourself to be taken on an adventure by British rapper, Melanin 9, who is already steadily making a name for himself as a real lyricist. A couple of weeks ago, Melanin 9 chopped it up with the UK’s online Rawroots to speak on the release of his debut album Magna Carta which can be bought now on iTunes.

He talks about his early days of deejaying, comin up in London and the early crews he worked with, working with producers Chemo, Beat Butcha, Jehst and Bronze Nazareth and plans on working with them in the future, the eclectic production on Magna Carta and his approach to the art of emceeing and lyricism.
