The new album Righteous Fury by Kansas based MC Matt Maddox releases a fortnight today on Red Phone Records / Seven 13 Music

Originally from Long Beach in southern California, the ex Guerilla War Tactix has been a busy man in the lead up to his sophomore LP dropping on 25th February, with series of media interviews on both sides of the Atlantic and preparing for a run of dates with Reef The Lost Cauze and Adlib starting on 20th February.

There has been a growing appreciation for this album within media circles for its authentic & contemporary hip hop sound, packed full of superior lyricism and wordplay, high quality production and turntablism

Their writer Matt Watkins took time out recently to speak with Kansas based MC Matt Maddox as he prepares to release his sophomore album Righteous Fury on 25th February.

They discuss his origins in Long Beach California and his earliest work as part of the international crew Guerilla War Tactix, the writing process involved with the album and the range of producers and featured artists such as Nemesis, C Lance, Sicknature, Vanderslice, Skammadix, Tragedy Khadafi, Reef The Lost Cauze, King Magnetic and Adlib, his touring plans for the year which will take in both coasts, Canada, UK, Europe, Japan and Australia and his thoughts on other aspects of the music industry – artists he rates, life as an independent artist, the representation of hip hop today and much more

Following on from their recent interview with the Kansas based MC, American online music magazine Soundparlor reviewed his sophomore album “Righteous Fury” which releases 25th February on Red Phone Records / Seven 13 Music

Drawing from his origins in Long Beach southern California, the album reflects his musical influences in terms of classic hip hop with a mix of the more raucous approach of a Rage Against the Machine. The review picks up on his own substantial contribution to the album and the mindset behind it:

“It’s a deep collection–19 songs–yet comes in at just around an hour, meaning Maddox favors quick hits rather than extended jams. Now based in Kansas, Cali rapper and ex Guerilla War Tactix member Matt Maddox is hitting the ground running in 2014

With his first solo album in 4 years “Righteous Fury” due to release on February 25th, he will also be busy on the road. Saturday 7th December marked the date for London rapper & producer Apex Zero’s album launch party at The Vibe Bar in Brick Lane.

Reality Provoking Liberation was the debut solo album for the member of the UK hip hop duo First and Last, and it released on 28th October to wide critical acclaim from media around the country

In conjunction with local live promoter Hoochinoo Events, Apex put together a strong line up for the night, showcasing tracks from his album with a live band, and there were also performances by Caxton Press, the latest member of the city’s Triple Darkness crew Iron Braydz, DJ A.Gee from Itch FM and expertly hosted by Peaches

The event was filmed by south London cameraman Jimmy Chiba of Chiba Visuals, who as well as catching footage of the performances took time out with Apex himself who speaks on the event, his album and the support he’s had. The high quality visuals acts as a great document of the event, captures the energy of the artists and the audience, and represents the positive vibe common at live UK hip hop shows to full effect
