Been quite a 12 months for hip hop producer Frost Gamble, originally from NY State but now resident in Canada.

Having signed with Miami’s 22 Entertainment, whose back catalogue includes Royce da 5’9″, Fashawn, Joe Budden, J-Kwon and KXNG Crooked, his first release on his new deal was the “Veteran” EP with long time sparring partner, east coast rapper Tone Chop, in November ’16.

This was followed quickly by the album “Black Beach” with another of his Nostalgia Clic stable of artists, Detroit rapper ZotheJerk. Release in May this year and featuring KXNG Crooked, Guilty Simpson, Boldy James and Sadat X, it received worldwide media coverage including a review in the renowned MOJO Magazine.

As we enter the latter half of 2017, he has two more releases on the immediate horizon. September 29th is the date for the new album “Respect Is Earned Not Given” again with Tone Chop and featuring Kool G Rap, Planet Asia, Tragedy Khadafi and rap battling phenomenon D.N.A.

This will be followed on October 20th with the “Rare Fabric” EP, a joint venture with Tragedy Khadafi. Meantime, he’s been recording new music with Horseshoe Gang, Royce da 5’9″ and is also near completion of a solo producer album “I Missed My Bus” which includes guest feature artists Ruste Juxx, Ras Kass, Skyzoo, Rah Digga, Guilty Simpson, KXNG Crooked and many more.

Midwest journalist Sinseer took time out recently to speak with Frost about his earliest days in production, his influences and style, the historical relationship with Tone Chop and Zo, his tie up with the label and of course all of his past and future projects.

It’s proving a busy time for producer Frost having released “Black Beach” earlier this year with Detroit’s ZotheJerk, “Respect Is Earned Not Given” precedes a new EP “Rare Fabric” with Tragedy Khadafi out on October 20th.

He is also currently working on new music with Royce da 5’9″ and Horseshoe Gang while completing a new solo project “I Missed My Bus” which includes guest artists KXBG Crooked, Ras Kass, Skyzoo, Rah Digga, Ruste Juxx, Guilty Simpson and many more.

Hip Hop Breath is a quarterly magazine published on Issuu.

NY State rapper and producer combo, Tone Chop & Frost Gamble, go all the way back to their days as rap battle rivals during the late 90’s before Frost re-located to Winnpeg, Canada and focused solely on beatmaking.

They released their first official collaborative project on November 18th last year, the “Veteran” EP being a warm up for their plans in 2017.

The album “Black Beach” is Detroit rapper ZotheJerk’s social commentary on the existence for many in today’s Black America written from his own experiences and cataloguing those of others.

Issues of police brutality, oppression and injustices are laid out like an open wound while balanced by the acceptance of the responsibility a positive paternal role model must shoulder to break the cycle of self inflicted urban decay. New single “My Negus” released today by Detroit rapper ZotheJerk featuring legendary Random Axe frontman Guilty Simpson.

It’s the second to be taken from his new album “Black Beach” produced entirely by Frost Gamble, a prolific beatmaker originally from NY State but now based in Winnipeg, and follows “Risk vs Reward” featuring Sadat X.

Out on May 26th, the album also features KXNG Crooked, Boldy James, Young Bleed and Tone Chop. Politically charged, the themes are Zo’s perspective on today’s “Black America”, an MC in receipt of a “Humanitarian of the Year” award for mentoring work in the community. Nine 5 Four Magazine is an online digital publication covering Canada and the United States.

They sat down recently with Detroit rapper ZotheJerk and NY State producer Frost Gamble (now resident in Winnipeg) ahead of the release of their new album “Black Beach” on May 26th.

In the resulting feature just published, Zo speaks on the traditional links between the music scenes in Detroit, Michigan and Canada while Frost compares the appreciation of true essence hip hop “north of the border” to that in Europe.

Frost’s approach to production is steeped in the traditions of crate digging channeled through an Akai MPC, and he speaks on the construct via sampling while they both go on to discuss their working chemistry and the logistics involved despite being based distances apart.

Zo too has led a nomadic lifestyle, moving from the D to Kansas and then Hudson, Ohio. The pair discuss the decision to return to Detroit for part of the recording process which took place at Mr Porter’s original home studio, and also how travelling has helped shape their overall approaches to music and life.
