The album “Black Beach” is Detroit rapper ZotheJerk’s social commentary on the existence for many in today’s Black America written from his own experiences and cataloguing those of others.

Issues of police brutality, oppression and injustices are laid out like an open wound while balanced by the acceptance of the responsibility a positive paternal role model must shoulder to break the cycle of self inflicted urban decay. He offers messages of hope and aspiration, and walks the walk having received a “Humanitarian of the Year” award for mentoring work in the community.

Lyrically intense, the musical backdrop is provided by one of the fastest emerging producers in hip hop, NYC State’s Frost Gamble who is now resident in Winnipeg, Canada. The crate digger fuses jazz, soul, r&b and electronica for a contemporary take on traditional techniques, with some turntablism thrown into the mix.

US online “The Balcony Life Blog” have just published a review of the album which reflects these different ingredients, and acknowledging the pivotal role they play. Read what they have to say HERE

Meanwhile, Irish journalist Stephen Dorney has included the album in his Weekly Capsule Reviews series. Read his summary HERE

Detroit rapper ZotheJerk and NY state producer Frost Gamble (now resident in Winnipeg, Canada), release their new album “Black Beach” on Friday May 26th 2017.

Politically charged, it’s Zo’s perspective on today’s “Black America” addressing issues which gave rise to the emergence of the Black Lives Matter movement, the pivotal role of strong paternal figures in raising their children while also presenting an optimistic & aspirational vision of the future.

Crate digger Frost, now emerging as one of the most prolific producers around, brings a diverse array of sampled breaks and beats to match the mood swings, incorporating classic soul, jazz and hip hop hooks to set the perfect backdrop.

ATM-RhymeJunkieInterview

Fair to say that 2016 will have proven to be a busy year for Long Beach hip hop crew Horseshoe Gang.

They released their new album “Anti-Trap Music” in April, the album immediately entering iTunes charts’ Top 50 in 15 countries with Amazon’s initial CD stock sold out in a day.

Their elder brother KXNG Crooked (aka Crooked I) had been developing a new talent show “One Shot” which is now due for first broadcast this month with the group featuring as judges, and in September a second limited edition album “4 Brothers” will be released, again through Seven 13 Entertainment.

Peter Johnstone from US online magazine Rhyme Junkie caught up with them recently to discuss their experience of the music industry, their views on trap music, the different lyrical styles each member brings to the group, the political content of tracks such as “Shoe-icide Squad” and what people can expect from “4 Brothers”.

Shoe-icideHipHopDX

Long Beach crew Horseshoe Gang released their album “Anti-Trap Music” on April 29th, and within a week it entered the top 50 of iTunes’ charts in 15 countries.

From it was the single “Shoe-icide Squad”, the group’s savage verbal attack on police brutality against the black community, delivered with a ferocity that drew many to compare it to NWA’s “F*ck The Police”. The appropriately raucous beat is courtesy of Danish production duo Tabu (Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Tech N9ne)

With the recent events in Minnesota, Louisiana, Florida and now Canada taking place in the midst of political upheaval, the west coast rappers have put their full weight behind the Black Lives Matter movement by releasing this new official video, premiered by HIPHOP DX

HG11

Last week, Demetrius, Kenny and Julius from Horseshoe Gang dropped by the Inglewood studios of Homegrown Radio as guests of the HGR Live Show.

During the Long Beach group’s most in depth interview ever, they discussed a huge range of issues relating to the group directly and the wider world of hip hop and politics.

The interview began with the concept behind their album title “Anti-Trap Music” released earlier in April and their massive level of output over the years, including their Mixtape Monthly series which lasted a full year.

They explain this work ethic has its roots in a musical family background, and also explain their mother’s role in their education, the brothers never having attended public school and having often experienced homelessness.

IMG_1023

They discuss last year’s rap battle with Funk Volume, provide an insight to their upcoming new album “4 Brothers”, and address the wider subject of why they haven’t stepped into the rap battle arena or pursued solo projects.

A debate follows as to how rappers are rated, what defines a lyricist given the multitude of styles, and how aware a younger generation will be of anything not currently the staple diet of mainstream radio or clubland.

The conversation turns political, addressing recent high profile cases of police brutality and how the options available at the US elections might help, if at all.

With the interview drawing to a close, the studio addresses the recent VH1 Hip Hop Honors for Female Rappers before the group reveal they will appear as judges on a new tv talent show “One Shot” due to be shown on B.E.T. from August 23rd.

LISTEN BACK !

The group will be releasing a new video for “Shoe-icide Squad” – described as their version of NWA’s “Fuck the Police” – in the next few days. Connect with them on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram

Omerta-TheREUPSpot

Baltimore rapper M.I., one half of hip hop duo Constant Deviants, spoke with the UK’s Ethan Everton for the US online magazine The REUP Spot recently about his various new ventures.

First up of course was the new album “Omerta” which was released digitally on June 28th and is being distributed on vinyl and CD formats worldwide by Fatbeats now.

MI2

They then move on to the subject of his recent move into the world of film making as an actor, writer and producer. Having already released a co:production with European affiliates SWC last year called “Swiss Banks”, his new movie “Six2Six” co:starring Treach (Naughty by Nature), Syleena Johnson and Chief Rocker Busy Bee was selected by Ralph McDaniels for a special screening at next month’s Hip Hop Film Festival in New York.

Finally, as co:owner of Six2Six Records and the new sub division Six2Six Films, he discusses his vision for the label’s future and further expansion. Read the full feature HERE

OmertaCover

The album is available to buy as a digital download direct from Six2Six Records HERE. As mentioned earlier, Fatbeats are currently distributing the physical formats of vinyl and CD to specialist stores around the world.

Last week they released their third single from the album. “Reign Storms” was written in the aftermath of the death of Freddie Gray at the hands of Baltimore Police and the riots which ensued, and of course its release is all the more poignant due to well documented recent events in Minnesota, Dallas and Louisiana

Last Friday, M.I. and DJ Cutt from Constant Deviants dropped into Brooklyn’s Bodega Cold Kutz studio, the show streaming live every Friday from 5pm – 8pm EST.

DJ Joe Bodega spins the real deal when it comes to hip hop, assisted this week by DJ Toshi, and the show breaks for interview segments.

In this 30 minute interview with Constant Deviants (it begins 45 minutes into the show), hosts Jay Drilla and J2ThaMar cover a lot of interesting territory with the duo. First off they discuss the group’s earliest days, how they came together to form the group and how between 2000 – 2006 the group was on an effective hiatus.

MI2

This was due to M.I. signing a solo deal with Arista at the time, arranged by J Cole’s current manager Mark Pitts, while DJ Cutt engineered several albums for Roc-A-Fella. In this particular interview M.I. and Cutt go into far more detail than perhaps has been previously the case about the realities of life at these labels and the consequences it had for them.

In a similar vein, more specific information is provided regarding the circumstances around a 2006 remix of the Rick Ross track “Yup” which featured N.O.R.E. and M.I., but which was sent around djs incorrectly naming M1 from Dead Prez as the featured artist…just so this is cleared up once and for all !

CD1

Baltimore’s M.I. is then asked for his perspective on the riots in the city which took place in 2015 and he gives an interesting and informative perspective on the realities of what led up to these events and the extent to which it actually affected the city as a whole.

They also discuss a range of other subjects including the new album “Omerta”, the move into film making, the use of sampling and differentials in hip hop production, underground and mainstream hip hop and much more. Definitely worth a watch, check it out on Vimeo

Omerta” is being distributed by Fatbeats worldwide on CD and vinyl formats from July 15th, and the digital version can be bought now direct from Six2Six Records’ BANDCAMP

ATM-TheRealHipHop

Little while back, Chicago journalist Sherron Shabazz, owner of the online The Real Hip Hop jumped on Skype with Long Beach group Horseshoe Gang shortly after the relase of their album “Anti-Trap Music”

They spoke at length about a variety of subjects beginning with the meaning behind the album title and the concept that large areas of hip hop today has moved away from carrying any real message of note.

The discussion moved on to their song “Shoe-icide Squad”, quoted by some as a modern day “Fuck The Police”, and the incident involving Chicago’s Laquan McDonald who was shot and killed by police is debated in the context of their single. The subject then moves to the years they’ve operated as a group, comparing that to most others who inevitably break up as the urge to fly solo becomes too strong, whereas the four brothers see their future as a unit.

The feature also sees them outline the knowledge passed down to them by their elder brother Crooked I while they go into some of the finer detail behind their well documented rap battle with Hopsin’s Funk Volume.

ATM-StreetsConnect

In the lead up to the release of their album “Anti-Trap Music” on April 29th, Horseshoe Gang, sat down with west coast online magazine Streets Connect.

In one of their most in-depth interviews to date, the group spoke on a wide range of issues. They outlined the recording process and how they select the different styles of production, and the whole ethos behind the meaning of their album title. This leads them onto the wider subject of lyricism in hip hop, and the positive and negative influences these have depending on how imagery is portrayed per genre.

Their track “Shoe-icide Squad” has been much heralded as their version of NWA’s “Fuck the Police”, taking a stand against police brutality and protecting their community, and notably choosing to speak out on this when others have backed down. As explained in the feature this comes from the influence of listening to artists such as Rakim and moves the conversation forward to Tupac’s legacy, the long lasting effect it’s had on them, and the the west coast scene to this day.

HG2

The discussion moves on again to touch upon their well documented rap battle with Hopsin’s Funk Volume, their plans to release a comic book series and they also go into more detail about their fanbase overseas, notably in the UK and Europe. Currently sitting in iTunes Top 50 in 15 different countries would bear witness to that fact.

Very interesting insight into all of that & more which can be read in full HERE
