New York State sparring partners Tone Chop & Frost Gamble follow last year’s critically acclaimed “Veteran” EP with the release of the new album “Respect Is Earned Not Given” on September 29th 2017.

Rammed full of quality beats and bars, Frost’s production bridges the classic and contemporary eras combining sampling and original recording techniques infused with soul, r&b, funk, dub and electronica

Armed with a sharp wit, punchline bars and incisive metaphors, Chop’s notoriety as a lyrical marksman has been long established, and he is joined on the new album by featured artists Kool G Rap, Planet Asia, Canadian upcomer White Rhino, the world’s most viewed online rap battler DNA and Tragedy Khadafi with whom Frost is currently recording a new album

The album “Black Beach” is Detroit rapper ZotheJerk’s social commentary on the existence for many in today’s Black America written from his own experiences and cataloguing those of others.

Issues of police brutality, oppression and injustices are laid out like an open wound while balanced by the acceptance of the responsibility a positive paternal role model must shoulder to break the cycle of self inflicted urban decay. He offers messages of hope and aspiration, and walks the walk having received a “Humanitarian of the Year” award for mentoring work in the community.

Lyrically intense, the musical backdrop is provided by one of the fastest emerging producers in hip hop, NYC State’s Frost Gamble who is now resident in Winnipeg, Canada. The crate digger fuses jazz, soul, r&b and electronica for a contemporary take on traditional techniques, with some turntablism thrown into the mix.

US online “The Balcony Life Blog” have just published a review of the album which reflects these different ingredients, and acknowledging the pivotal role they play. Read what they have to say HERE

Meanwhile, Irish journalist Stephen Dorney has included the album in his Weekly Capsule Reviews series. Read his summary HERE

Magna Carta is one of the best British hip hop albums I’ve heard in a long, long time” concludes Andrew Kay in his review of Melanin 9’s debut LP for the UK magazine Blacksheep

An in depth track by track analysis is then perfectly summarized, highlighting the mix of an emcee with deep thought provoking lyrics and highly skilled wordplay, complimented by a range of beats from the standard boom – bap hip hop head-nodders, jazzy mood music and electronica.

Melanin 9 isn’t an artist afraid to push the musical boundaries, experiment with different sounds and production and yet keep a the 14 track album coherent and one which is already providing high praise from many which you will see in the weeks ahead.

The UK hip hop community has long known about this highly talented wordsmith, but there is about to be a wider appreciation from a larger cross section of the musical fraternity
