With just over a week to go until the release of their official debut album “Everything 050” on 4th August, Newark trio Riq da Kid, Tru Trilla and Prince AK – aka 050 Boyz – sat down with Hip Hop Vibe Staff Writer Stranga the Great to chop it up about their history, the album and the New Jersey scene

In this new “On The Rise” feature, the group who all first picked up the mic during the Golden Era discuss the history of hip hop in the Garden State and their own connection to Queen Latifah’s Flavor Unit, the sound that defines them and their own influences coming up, their immediate plans with the album and finish by addressing recent high profile racial issues affecting the USA including the removal of the confederate flag, attacks on black churches and police brutality

First on Wednesday 12th August on The Halftime Show on WNYU and then later in the month on Sunday 30th August for his Rap Is Outta Control Show on Sirius XM.

You will also be able to catch 050 Boyz perfoming live at Newark’s Lincoln Park Festival this Sunday, 26th July. Their live shows are always big on energy and definitely worth seeing if you’re in the area. Expect a fuel injected version of what’s represented in their “Hot Damn” video!

The album is true to its name, 0-50 being the area code for New Jersey, with many features from local artists including Treach, DoItAll, Ib the Druid, Famiil, Lakim Shabazz, B Wells & Tha Advocate. In this interview they discuss how the group was formed, the concept and inspiration behind the group and the album and explain their long time association with the album’s sole producer Clinton Place. Newark hip hop group 050 Boyz took time out recently to speak with Sherron Shabazz recently for the US online The Real Hip Hop.

The trio Riq da Kid, Tru Trilla and Prince AK spoke about the meaning behind the group’s name, their working relationships with Treach from Naughty by Nature and Lords of the Underground front man DoItAll, the concepts behind their videos for the singles Hot Damn and Get Back, the recording process and their new album “Everything 050”.

New Jersey trio Riq da Kid, Tru Trilla and Prince AK – aka 050 Boyz – release their first official album “Everything 050” on 4th August.

Between them they have many years in the local hip hop scene, whether with previous groups or solo projects, and were heavily involved with the Garden State Greats movement of 2004, a concept devised by Treach (Naughty by Nature) & Fam (Rottin Razkals) The vision of unifying new emerging artists and established names in the area was re-generated by the trio with the assistance of DoItAll (Lords of the Underground) in 2011 when the group was formed.

The album represents this ethos and their history. Entirely produced by Clinton Place, a long time associate of Prince AK from their days of touring with Flavor Unit’s Supreme C, it also includes guest features by some of the hottest Emcees from Jersey’s underground. In addition to appearances by Treach and DoItAll there is also a little international flavour brought to the table by the UK’s WiseRap

Latest in their “The Whole 9” series US online The 9 Elements sat down with veteran Baltimore / New Jersey hip hop duo Constant Deviants recently ahead of the release of the group’s fourth studio album “Avant Garde” on the 12th May 2015.
