CD-RapManiacza

Constant Deviants release their new album “Avant Garde” on 12th May through their own Six2Six label. It will be available worldwide on vinyl, CD and digital formats.

Next year marks the 20th anniversary of the release of their debut 12″ classic single “Competition Catch Speed Knots” when they first came together by performing at NY college parties. Then based in Brooklyn and New Jersey, they also worked on seperate projects for Arista and Roc-A-Fella before reforming specifically as a group in 2009 and setting up their own label

Their focus both as artists and a label on the traditional elements of hip hop helped them build strongly with the European market where there has always been a long standing appreciation for this style. This led to developing a working relationship with Swiss label SWC Records, releasing projects under the name Trilateral Commission, most recently the “Swiss Banks” movie. The soundtrack uses their album with the visual concept based on the best selling novel of the same name. M.I. plays an acting role in the film.

Over the past few months, there has been widespread interest in the release and their “3Stylez” video series, a trilogy of freestyles showing M.I. and DJ Cutt performing live and direct as hip hop intended. The first two videos “Heavy Artillery” and “Art of War” were released in April. Their single “Breathin” registered #1 in the college radio charts and featured in the UK’s print publication DJ Magazine, with a subsequent bonus joint “Just Make Music” also getting regular spins. They’ve already featured in various international publications with much more to come.

Constant Deviants release their fourth studio album “Avant Garde” on 12th May through their own Six2Six label on vinyl, CD and digital formats.

Been a busy time for the veteran Baltimore & New Jersey duo. Recently they released the film “Swiss Banks” with their partners in Switzerland SWC Records, completed filming of their freestyle series “3Stylez” and have been conducting interviews with a whole range of international media. Most recently, Emcee M.I. was seen on the new “Rapping with Leiberman” online tv chat show talking politics and hip hop with SiriusXM Host Jon Leiberman.

They have just dropped a bonus joint “Just Make Music”, recorded between albums and premiered by US online Straight Fresh as part of a new feature published on them today

In the interview the pair discuss the production process with the album down to the reason behind its title, and the decision to have only one featured artist Aye Wun appear. They then speak on how they first came together in the 90’s, and what brought them back together in 2009 after they had both worked in the major label sector, and the ethos behind the label Six2Six Records they set up at that time.

They also go into detail about the joint “Yup” they recorded with Rick Ross and N.O.R.E. in 2008, and provide details about how the film “Swiss Banks” was created, and give their thoughts on the current state of mainstream and independent hip hop as well as what has contributed most to their longevity in the game

New Jersey / Baltimore duo Constant Deviants have worked together in various ways since the mid 90’s, and after a time spent operating within the major label sector, they came back together in 2009 to set up Six2Six Records, and since then have released 3 studio albums and various orther affiliated projects.

Their fourth studio album “Avant Garde” releases on 12th May, and Lafayette Hicks – himself involved with hip hop since the good ‘ol days – ran the rule over it for online The Hip Hop Foundation

Afforded a 4 star rating, the review also outlines some of the duo’s back story and notes Emcee M.I.’s lyricism “There’s great storytelling here, words of wisdom, braggadocia, a bit of thuggery…..something for everyone” and on DJ Cutt’s production “His beats have that golden era quality to them but by the same token, they sound fresh and not like some recycled 90’s tracks. I also liked how he incorporated scratches into the tracks, cutting up everything from Onyx to Slick Rick. He even got in a line from my favorite old school movie Beat Street, so I was won over just from that.

It’s a really in depth review by someone who obviously has a lot of experience in the genre, and you can read it all HERE

Constant Deviants have also filmed a special freestyle trilogy. The first from the “3Stylez” series was launched last week, with Episodes 2 & 3 coming soon. Check out “Heavy Artillery” on Vimeo
