Taken from his album “A Dream Deferred” released late 2012, Brooklyn’s Skyzoo has just launched the new video for the single “Spike Lee Was My Hero” featuring Talib Kweli and produced by Tall Black Guy.

First aired on BET’s 106 & Park as their “New Jam of the Day” on Tuesday 22nd January, the video also features the legendary filmmaker Lee and CBS News This Morning presenter Gayle King. A special “behind the scenes” video was also produced about the making of the video.

In the January edition of DJ Magazine in UK stores now, the Hip Hop Singles Reviews page places Melanin 9’s “White Russian” featuring Roc Marciano as their “Money Shot Single of the Month”

Written by the magazine’s Neil Kulkarni :

“So pleased M9 is finally making the leap from mixtapes (if you ain’t heard High Fidelity or 144,000 you ain’t been reading this page enough!) to actually releasing an official album : this is the first single from “Magna Carta” and is just astonishing. A slow burning groove over which RM drapes some engrossing rhymes, crepuscular keys and smoky cymbals riding the groove deep intro your cortex. Essential”

Recently, the publication’s Taytula Burke interviewed Melanin 9 for their “1 2 Watch” feature.

They discuss his new album “Magna Carta”, what acts as his main motivations, his thoughts on hip hop generally and the journalist picks up on his approach to writing :

“If you haven’t guessed by now, Melanin 9 is not your average ‘money cash hoes’ type of spitter. His name alludes to the fact that he has a deeper way of thinking than your average guy on the corner……

Speaking of genius, I think there was a hint of that going on during the composition of Magna Carta. The LP has a throwback ‘diggin’ in the crates’ kind of vibe; so if you are bored of the monotonous computer generated sounds around, you’ll love the jazzy soulful tones and ‘real hip hop’ beats that M9 flows effortlessly over…..

If you are into British hip hop, this guy should definitely be on your playlist. Melanin 9 already has a solid international fanbase and I can only see Magna Carta helping the numbers to increase.”

The coverage of Melanin 9’s debut album “Magna Carta” continues into 2013.

Released on the 3rd December, it was one of the most written about UK hip hop albums of 2012, and the latest instalment is via James Savundra for London’s online platform I Am Music TV

Here he combines a review with an interview, with the London emcee speaking on putting the album together, the inspiration for the subject matter & writing process, selection of featured artists and the reasons behind there only being a relatively limited number and his plans for the new year.

The review itself is in depth and acknowledges the subject matter covered, the personal nature of the album and the skills on display as you’ll see from the introduction :

“Magna Carta should come with a warning. If you think you’ve copped yourself an easy-listening, stereotypical hip-hop album, then I’d advise you to return it. Brace yourself to be taken on an adventure by British rapper, Melanin 9, who is already steadily making a name for himself as a real lyricist. This project certainly isn’t one for the faint hearted, as M9 (as he is also known) overpowers the listener with verses that come from within. Everything you hear is real”

London’s monthly music newspaper and online platform The Guestlist Network had already given Melanin 9’s new release “Magna Carta” their full endorsement by naming it their “Album of the Month” at the beginning of November.

They have just followed that up with a new interview courtesy of Janine Francois

He speaks on his new album and how it was put together, the universal nature of hip hop culture compared to the more insular outlook of others, his thoughts on the Golden Era and the influence that has played in his writing style and his earlier days coming up through the scene

Nominated for MTV’s “Brand New Unsigned for 2013” recently, London’s Skripture launches his debut self produced single for No Help No Handouts Records.

“Bark (Back It Up)” is also the first release from this brand new British label set up to showcase some of the most creative and pioneering artists from around the world.

A founding member of The Truth MoveMENT and trans-Atlantic urban rock group The Score, Skripture has produced for Bashy, IAM1 and Saukrates, and developed his own solo career as an emcee and musician in recent times with the launch of his Skripture Sunday’s Mixtape in 2011. Drawing on influences as diverse as The Beatles, J Dilla, Wiley and Phonte, he’s busy in the studio recording new material for 2013.

The first single also comes with a remix by London grime producer Levlz who has worked with Chipmunk and Riko Dan of Roll Deep, and has already been taking up some impressive UK radio airtime. Releasing on 9th December, also look out for an accompanying video being launched in the next few weeks.
