Hotly tipped to be the one to watch from the new wave of emerging urban artists in the Southern scene, the first half of 2015 has seen him release a string of buzz tracks, singles and videos which culminated in the release of the EP. As part of their ongoing “Whole 9” series of features, US online publication “The 9 Elements” sat down recently with New Jersey’s Riq da Kid, Tru Trilla and Prince AK, otherwise known as 050 Boyz, to chop it up about their new album “Everything 050” which releases on 4th August

The group with strong roots in Newark and East Orange also spoke about some of their earliest influences from the local scene, their long association with Treach from Naughty by Nature and Lords of the Underground frontman DoItAll, and what’s going on right now in the Garden State’s hip hop scene.

A rapid rise to prominence from a new wave of emerging Southern urban artists has seen rapper and producer Ande Bishop make serious moves since his first solo track release “50 Centences” in only January of this year

A further string of single and buzz track launches leading into the Spring culminated in his own American Roulette enterprise signing a partnership deal with expanding US label Seven 13 Entertainment, marked by the release of his introductory EP “Ocean$” on 19th May.

It’s been a remarkable few months for the young artist, and recently journalist Ethan Everton spoke with him for the UK’s multi genre online magazine DataTransmission.

In this feature, the pair discuss that first release “50 Centences” premiered by The Source and the impact it made, including with G Unit themselves. He then speaks about the tie up with Seven 13 Entertainment, how that came about and his production work with stablemate Londn Blue last year on his EP “False Hope”.

They then turn their attention to the new EP, and the reasons behind why he didn’t handle any of the production himself, preferring to hand over to others on the American Roulette roster together with Taylor $upreme, and the influence The Game had in some of the concepts.

While also touching upon his approach to production, the feature concludes by outlining his plans for the next 12 months and the obstacles he’s overcome to achieve his level of progress.

Cosmic Hip Hop are a magazine with connections to both France and Switzerland, reporting in the main on “rap Francais” but with some international content.

They have an online platform carrying news, reviews and interviews, but they also occasionally produce a physical magazine sold in stores in areas of Europe, Canada and Africa, typically French speaking territories. They recently published Issue 9, their summer 2015 edition which also included in amongst their regular content a specific focus on New York and New Jersey.

In addition, they featured their interview with Cincinnati Emcee Buggs tha Rocka who had at the time just released his new album “Scattered Thoughts of An American Poet”. New Jersey trio Riq da Kid, Tru Trilla and Prince AK – aka 050 Boyz – release their first official album “Everything 050” on 4th August.

Between them they have many years in the local hip hop scene, whether with previous groups or solo projects, and were heavily involved with the Garden State Greats movement of 2004, a concept devised by Treach (Naughty by Nature) & Fam (Rottin Razkals) The vision of unifying new emerging artists and established names in the area was re-generated by the trio with the assistance of DoItAll (Lords of the Underground) in 2011 when the group was formed.

The album represents this ethos and their history. Entirely produced by Clinton Place, a long time associate of Prince AK from their days of touring with Flavor Unit’s Supreme C, it also includes guest features by some of the hottest Emcees from Jersey’s underground. In addition to appearances by Treach and DoItAll there is also a little international flavour brought to the table by the UK’s WiseRap

Latest to be published in this series is New Jersey hip hop trio 050 Boyz who release their debut official album “Everything 050” on 4th August, the follow up to their “050 Dat” mixtape released in 2013. A few weeks ago, Emcee M.I. from Constant Deviants sat down with journalist Roberta Lampley, and the subsequent feature published in The Hype Magazine takes an in depth look into how the group operates in the greater context of life as an independent.

The duo released their fourth studio album “Avant Garde” on 12th May through Six2Six Records, a label M.I. co-owns and runs. The interview delves deeper into the group’s earlier days and touches upon their time with major labels Arista and Roc-A-Fella before returning to the independent fold and beginning their own label.

They discuss their marketing strategy with a brand very much rooted in the traditional Golden Era but with a modern day approach, the rise in vinyl sales, the importance of physical product and how they developed an overseas presence particularly in Europe. The theme in the interview is the wealth of experience M.I. has from his two decades in hip hop having seen the industry on both sides of the Major / Indie coin. The knowledge is likely to be useful to all artists and labels starting up today.

They finish by talking about the new album, how it was devised and how it represents a duo with an almost symbiotic understanding of each other that produces, as the journalist writes, a feel from start to finish of “a cypher with your DJ, and the DJ kept changing the beats“.

For fans of Constant Deviants and those with an interest in the mechanics of operating as an independent artist or label in what would be classified as “real hip hop” today, the interview makes for excellent reading.
