Just before the turn of the year, the UK’s online tv channel OnTrax visited New York and New Jersey to conduct a series of filmed interviews.

They sat down for 5 minutes with Brick City rapper Tru Trilla in the studios owned by local legends Lords of the Underground, and chopped it up about his earliest influences which naturally included the Lords, Naughty by Nature, Lakim Shabazz and Queen Latifah, and his journey starting out in hip hop.

He reveals his own original move from poetry to writing lyrics, and the passion felt in the creative process transferred to the listener, describing music as “art in motion and medicine to the soul” citing the track “I Remember” from his recently released EP “The Seymour Chronicles” as an example of the importance of writing from the heart.

North west London rapper Da Flyy Hooligan released his new album “S.C.U.M.” yesterday, October 27th.

In an extremely rare step for a British hip hop artist, he signed with a US label for the release, Miami’s 22 Entertainment. Produced entirely by Agor, featured artists are current US luminaries Westside Gunn and Hus Kingpin, and availability is on multiple formats from stores worldwide including Amazon, Bandcamp, iTunes and Spotify.

The new album “Black Beach” by Detroit rapper ZotheJerk and NY state producer Frost Gamble, now resident in Winnipeg Canada, releases on Friday May 26th through 22 Entertainment.

It represents Zo’s social commentary on the experience for many in today’s Black America, politically charged it strikes an intelligent balance of addressing a number of very real issues while still offering positive solutions. The musical backdrop provided by Frost mixes soul and edgier hip hop beats to catch the mood swings perfectly, adding to his reputation as one of the fastest emerging producers in the genre.

US online magazine Pop Break picks up on these nuances in their review of the album just published, describing it as “one of the best examples of ‘Grown Man Rap’ we’ve heard in a while”. Affording the release an 8/10 rating, you can read their full appraisal HERE

Featuring Slaughterhouse frontman KXNG Crooked, Random Axe’s Guilty Simpson, Brand Nubian Sadat X, and Boldy James, “Black Beach” will be available from all digital stores including Spotify and iTunes, while a special Deluxe edition including bonus cuts and instrumentals will be available exclusively from Bandcamp.

The first official collaborative project by NY State rapper Tone Chop & Winnipeg based producer Frost Gamble released on November 18th.

The 7 track EP “Veteran”, including the single “Leave It Alone” featuring Ruste Juxx – a tribute to Sean Price – is available through Seven 13 Music & Entertainment on iTunes

The latest review comes courtesy of the University of Colorado’s “CU Independent” publication written by their Arts contributor Benjamin Vernon. Afforded a 7/10 rating in what is an in depth analysis, it outlines the qualities of Tone’s own lyricism complemeted by the various featured artists and acknowledges Frost Gamble’s “excellent job in creating a distinct sound for each track“.

Shortly before the release of their new EP “Veteran”, NY State rapper Tone Chop and Winnipeg based producer Frost Gamble jumped on Skype to speak with London journalist Taytula Burke for long running online publication British Hip Hop.

The feature published today encompasses their discussion relating to the spirit and sound of the new EP in line with how they first met at rap battles during the 90’s, while also establishing their firm committment to hip hop’s evolution for a modern era.

The opener “Dedication” shouts out many of the G.O.A.T.’s including Rakim, Queen Latifah and Pac, an opening salvo declaring their origins and influences followed by biographical accounts in “Back in the Days” and “Better with Time”. However “Step Up” switches focus to the future, in line with the EP’s role as a warm up for a new album next year.

In the lead up to the release of their new EP “Veteran”, NY State rapper Tone Chop and Winnipeg based producer Frost Gamble spoke with Chicago based journalist Sherron Shabazz, the editor of US online ‘The Real Hip Hop’.

The pair first met as rivals in Binghamton’s rap battle scene during the 90’s before eventually teaming up, however due to Frost’s re-location they then pursued solo careers while keeping in touch with the occasional collaboration. The EP represents the duo’s first official extended release, a warm up to an album scheduled for 2017.

The interview addresses the recording process of the EP and how they came to the decision to finally work on a more extensive project. The subject matters then broaden as they give their thoughts on the new wave of “drug rappers” and the effect on today’s youth, the issue of emcees using writers, educating the next generation of rappers about the pioneers, the benefit to the scene of contemporary artists such as Kendrick Lamar and J Cole and much more
