Once rivals in Binghamton NY’s rap battle scene during the 90’s, Tone Chop & Frost Gamble subsequently became partners in rhyme and tagging.

On relocating to Winnipeg, Frost focused solely on production, working with J-Ro, Sadat-X, and Rakim’s son Tahmell. Earlier this year his joint “Honey” with ZotheJerk appeared on Seven 13’s “God Bless Dope Rappers” compilation which also featured Royce da 5’9″, Horseshoe Gang, Crooked I & Kid Vishis

Meanwhile back in upstate NY, rapper and producer Chop released an extensive series of mixtapes whether solo or as part of the group Binghamton’s Most Wanted. He also supplied the beat for Tom Gist’s “Momma”

The pair decided to re-unite for their first official collaborative release with the resultant EP “Veteran” dropping November 18th through Seven 13 Music & Ent (available on iTunes)

Contributor Angelo Gingerello has just run the rule over it for online magazine Pop Break, and you can read his in-depth review which affords the EP an 8/10 rating HERE

ATM-TheRealHipHop

Little while back, Chicago journalist Sherron Shabazz, owner of the online The Real Hip Hop jumped on Skype with Long Beach group Horseshoe Gang shortly after the relase of their album “Anti-Trap Music”

They spoke at length about a variety of subjects beginning with the meaning behind the album title and the concept that large areas of hip hop today has moved away from carrying any real message of note.

The discussion moved on to their song “Shoe-icide Squad”, quoted by some as a modern day “Fuck The Police”, and the incident involving Chicago’s Laquan McDonald who was shot and killed by police is debated in the context of their single. The subject then moves to the years they’ve operated as a group, comparing that to most others who inevitably break up as the urge to fly solo becomes too strong, whereas the four brothers see their future as a unit.

The feature also sees them outline the knowledge passed down to them by their elder brother Crooked I while they go into some of the finer detail behind their well documented rap battle with Hopsin’s Funk Volume.

ATM-RespectMag

Couple weeks back, Respect Magazine contributor Jeremy Hecht jumped on Skype with the four members of west coast rap group Horseshoe Gang shortly after the release of their album “Anti-Trap Music”

During a very in-depth discussion they talk about the group dynamic, working together as four blood brothers and among the the earliest memories, Dice reveals the time Tupac offered him $100 to smoke a blunt and meeting Jay-Z, Jada Pinkett, Dr Dre, and Eric B & Rakim at Snoop’s house!

The interview then comes through the ages, the group giving their thoughts on today’s new artists by comparison to what they grew up listening to, and the differences in song structure method. While hip hop has evolved and diversified, with people finding their own lane, the group challenge aspects of the current debates comparing the different genres.

HG5

More specifically, they suggest people be exposed to all styles before assuming to speak with authority on the merits or otherwise of a particular genre – if you aint heard it, you can’t be speaking on it. This then moves the conversation on again to differentiate between those who can make a quick financial killing now, and those who will be held in esteem over the decades.

Inevitably the route of the discussion turns to the album title where they explain more the significance of lyrical content, and how it influences a younger generation, that artists need to take responsibility at some point for what they say. There is an underlying theme in the interview where the group are speaking to a younger generation, whether of listeners or of new artsists. With the latter, they finish the interview with some sound advice

ATM-HipHopDX

Earlier this week, Hip Hop DX offered their appraisal of the group’s new album with a review which you can read HERE

ATM-StreetsConnect

In the lead up to the release of their album “Anti-Trap Music” on April 29th, Horseshoe Gang, sat down with west coast online magazine Streets Connect.

In one of their most in-depth interviews to date, the group spoke on a wide range of issues. They outlined the recording process and how they select the different styles of production, and the whole ethos behind the meaning of their album title. This leads them onto the wider subject of lyricism in hip hop, and the positive and negative influences these have depending on how imagery is portrayed per genre.

Their track “Shoe-icide Squad” has been much heralded as their version of NWA’s “Fuck the Police”, taking a stand against police brutality and protecting their community, and notably choosing to speak out on this when others have backed down. As explained in the feature this comes from the influence of listening to artists such as Rakim and moves the conversation forward to Tupac’s legacy, the long lasting effect it’s had on them, and the the west coast scene to this day.

HG2

The discussion moves on again to touch upon their well documented rap battle with Hopsin’s Funk Volume, their plans to release a comic book series and they also go into more detail about their fanbase overseas, notably in the UK and Europe. Currently sitting in iTunes Top 50 in 15 different countries would bear witness to that fact.

Very interesting insight into all of that & more which can be read in full HERE

The album “Anti-Trap Music” can be bought on iTunes with CD versions available from Amazon Check out the full album stream
