NY State rapper Tone Chop and Winnipeg based producer Frost Gamble release their first collaborative EP “Veteran” through Seven 13 Music & Ent on November 18th. Available on pre-order via iTunes

Originally rivals in upstate NY’s rap battle scene during the 90’s, they became partners in rhyme, tagging and production. Already on record as crediting the wider hip hop culture and elements as being the catalyst for them to pick up the mic, US online The ReUp Spot sat down with them recently for their perspective on the evolution of hip hop over the past two decades.

The feature is an insightful historical record, as the pair discuss their own involvement in music, graffiti and breakdancing at a time when by comparison to today, the elements had a more prominent and influential role in the wider culture.

Subjects addressed act as a historical snapshot of the changes which have taken place. The switch from vinyl to Serato, the elevation of hip hop music, fashions and art elevated from the underground to the broader commercial world, and the emergence of the various sub genres which now exist.

Focusing on the new release, they discuss the reasons for collaborating officially for the first time after all these years, their previous solo releases and the impact of signing with Seven 13.

The article will likely be of extra interest to a younger generation, typically fed a very narrow representation by today’s media. There is more to it than that – go to the source, adapt and progress. “If you know whence you came, there are absolutely no limitations to where you can go” James Baldwin

Long Beach crew Horseshoe Gang released their album “Anti-Trap Music” on April 29th, and within a week it entered the top 50 of iTunes’ charts in 15 countries.

From it was the single “Shoe-icide Squad”, the group’s savage verbal attack on police brutality against the black community, delivered with a ferocity that drew many to compare it to NWA’s “F*ck The Police”. The appropriately raucous beat is courtesy of Danish production duo Tabu (Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Tech N9ne)

With the recent events in Minnesota, Louisiana, Florida and now Canada taking place in the midst of political upheaval, the west coast rappers have put their full weight behind the Black Lives Matter movement by releasing this new official video, premiered by HIPHOP DX

ATM-BritishHipHop

London journalist Taytula Burke jumped on Skype recently to speak with west coast hip hop group Horseshoe Gang in the lead up to the release of their new album “Anti-Trap Music” out on April 29th through Seven 13 Music & Ent.

As part of a broader feature piece for the UK online BritishHipHop.com, the interview focused on the meaning behind the title and the wider issue of lyricial content prevelant in various forms of the genre.

As in previous interviews, the group acknowledge the role artists such as Kendrick Lamar and J Cole have played in bringing the art of lyricism back to the table, but here again explain that one or two individuals cannot do that, or represent a movement alone. The inference being greater unity between like minded artists to help “clean up the industry” on a far larger scale

It’s an ongoing debate in the world of hip hop generally, but what’s certainly true is that the various evolutions have created very specific markets, often territory to territory. Apples & oranges.
