Shortly after the release of their new EP “Veteran” on November 18th, NY rapper Tone Chop & Winnipeg based producer Frost Gamble jumped on the phone with Canadian DJ Chase March live on air during his “The Word is Bond Rap Radio Show” broadcast on CHRW 94.9FM

Meanwhile, the pair also spoke with French magazine Hip Hop Breath recently.

Among the topics for discussion was how the duo first met at rap battles in upstate NY during the 90’s and the cultural elements that drew them to hip hop, the motive that drove them to work together on their first official EP release after all these years, and the inspiration behind their tribute track to Sean Price “Leave It Alone” featuring Ruste Juxx.

They also give their thoughts on the re-emergence of CD and vinyl formats, the comparisons of the US and European markets, the current rap battle scene broadcast online through channels such as KOTD TV and their hopes for the future of hip hop.

Earlier this week having just released their new EP “Veteran”, NY State rapper and Winnipeg based producer Frost Gamble spoke with west coast writer Dylan Fleming for the online publication One Avenue.

With an introduction headline “The classic boom bap era sound is revived with a vengeance” they discuss a number of subjects including how the pair first met, the current hip hop scenes in Canada and NYC, the rap battle leagues given they were originally rivals during the 90’s and of course the EP itself.

One of the leading names in the UK hip hop scene for the past several years, north London’s Melanin 9 is set to release a new solo album “Old Pictures” in the Spring of 2017.

A member of the highly rated Triple Darkness crew, his position as one of the country’s most gifted lyricists is well established and he brings all of his verbal dexterity to the table in this new joint “Polaroid”. Produced by Californian duo Walterwarm and Cowode, it is the first single to be taken from the new album and features British upcomer Karl Sage.

Despite the distance apart, they’ve been long time allies dating back to an original rap battle rivalry during the 90’s which would then develop into a working partnership. While focusing on solo careers over the past decade, the pair occasionally collaborated on one off projects, however “Veteran” marks their first official release together, a warm up for an album due in 2017.

Online publication Above Average Hip Hop ran the rule over the new EP in the review written by Riley Wallace published yesterday.

With a clear appreciation of their style, concept and authenticity, the review even goes as far to say that “Tone has easily become one of my top rhymers to watch” and notes the EP’s “timeless appeal“.

Once rivals in upstate NY’s rap battle scene, Binghamton rapper Tone Chop and Winnipeg based producer Frost Gamble have released their new EP “Veteran” today through Seven 13 Music & Entertainment.

Their first official collaborative project, the EP is a warm up for a new album planned in 2017 and includes the single “Leave It Alone” featuring Ruste Juxx and Nobi, a tribute to the late Sean Price.

The pair became partners in rhyme and tagging during the 90’s before Frost’s relocation saw them pursue solo careers. Collaborations with Tom Gist, Jinx da Juvy, Sadat-X, J-Ro and Rakim’s son Tahmell followed, while this year Frost contributed to Seven 13’s “God Bless Dope Rappers” compilation featuring Royce da 5’9″, Horseshoe Gang, Kid Vishis and Crooked I.

Armed with an MPC, Frost produces a classic soundscape of breaks, loops and turntablism over which Chop narrates his journey through life and hip hop. Lyrically on point through a series of punchline bars and hard hitting rhymes, dues are paid to the pioneers and a previous era while still embracing the future. 7 tracks deep, “Veteran” represents the true essence of a modern age and lays down a marker for next year.

Already on record as crediting the wider hip hop culture and elements as being the catalyst for them to pick up the mic, US online The ReUp Spot sat down with them recently for their perspective on the evolution of hip hop over the past two decades.

The feature is an insightful historical record, as the pair discuss their own involvement in music, graffiti and breakdancing at a time when by comparison to today, the elements had a more prominent and influential role in the wider culture.

Subjects addressed act as a historical snapshot of the changes which have taken place. The switch from vinyl to Serato, the elevation of hip hop music, fashions and art elevated from the underground to the broader commercial world, and the emergence of the various sub genres which now exist.

Focusing on the new release, they discuss the reasons for collaborating officially for the first time after all these years, their previous solo releases and the impact of signing with Seven 13.

Available to pre-order on ITUNES, the 7 tracks are the product of two artists who began as rap battle rivals in upstate NY before becoming partners in rhyme and tagging. Frost’s subsequent move to Canada saw the pair pursue solo careers, Chop releasing a whole series of mixtapes including collaborations with Tom Gist, St Laz and Jinx Da Juvy.

Now fully focused on beatmaking, Frost’s earlier productions saw him work with Sadat-X, Rakim’s son Tahmell and J-Ro. Earlier this year he contributed to Seven 13’s “God Bless Dope Rappers” compilation which also featured Royce da 5’9″, Horseshoe Gang, Kid Vishis and Crooked I.
