SoulonFire-DataTransmission

British online magazine DataTransmission is well known for its coverage of all type of dance music, from techno, house, dubstep and all other genres in between, reporting from all around the UK and hotspots such as Ibiza, Aiya Napa and various other European resorts & cities.

They also like their rap and hip hop music, and have just reviewed the new album Soul on Fire by rapper ethemadassassin, currently based in Los Angeles but most associated with his native North Carolina where he started out performing in the 90’s.

One half of Veteran Assassins, this is E’s third solo album which released on 17th September, and Janine Francois cast an eye over his most recent offering

ethemadassasin, lives up to regal standards as set by his previous releases such as, ‘Proverbs’ and ‘ Tomorrow Never Comes’ both dealing with the chaotic lifestyle lived by this Golden Era emcee” is how the review opens which notes his lyrcism, wit, humour, sarcasm and “hard cold truths” in what is an audio biopic of his life from his early days to the “latest scene in the movie of his life today”.

The album has received much credit for its open & honest approach, owning up to past mistakes, acknowledging struggles and successes, and also having a healthy dose of retrospective flava for those who remember or are fans of the sights, sounds and fashions of the 90’s.

The review summarizes “ethemadassasin does himself justice and for hardcore fans you will not be disappointed, as he lyrically delivers the goods. For those new to this ageless rapper, it is recommended you reference previous works to gain some context on ‘Soul on Fire.’ The album does just that, bares his soul for us to hear.

SoulOnFire-SBTV

The UK’s leading online youth broadcaster SBTV was set up by young entrepreneur Jamal Edwards a few years ago while still in his teens. For overseas readers, he built the site up from filming freestyles of new artists all over London, throwing them up on Youtube, and the view rate was literally massive.

Fast forward to today and he still supports the UK scene but also has content from some the biggest international artists around. When he’s not mixing with Virgin owner Richard Branson or Prince Charles, he’s appearing on BBC Breakfast TV promoting his new book. It has been quite a phenomenal rise for a brand now valued in the millions on the stock market. If you didn’t know the name before, research it!

His in house team also provide news, features and reviews, and the site’s Fiona Guest is the latest to run the rule over the new album by ethemadassassin. Most associated with Greensboro NC, the now LA based rapper released his third solo album “Soul on Fire” on Tuesday 17th September.

The review is headed “a potent mixture of lyrical agility and social consciousness” and is summarized “Soul On Fire is a mature drop from a seasoned MC, with a breadth of experience and skill under his belt. If you’re ready to hear the emotional realness of what E terms his ‘book of life,’ give it a listen.” Read the whole review HERE

SoulonFire-PopCulturez

UK based online magazine PopCulturez covers a wide range of interests including music genres rock, pop, country, r&b,hip hop and subjects such as sport, politics, tv, concerts….in other words news on the popular culture of the day.

They are the latest to cast an eye over the new album by rapper ethemadassassin, one half of the LA based duo Veteran Assassins most associated with North Carolina though has also worked out of New Jersey and Ohio at various times of his career.

“Soul on Fire” is his 3rd solo studio album, following on from the 2008 release “Tomorrow Never Comes” which included the video for Walk My Shoes as seen on UK stations MTV Base, Flava TV and others coast to coast across America. The current album is more auto biographical depicting his early days and the fashions, sounds and sights of the Nineties, while bringing things up to date of where he is today. Soul laced tracks like “80’s & 90’s” & “Can’t Get Enough” will be recognizable to older heads whereas fuel injected bangers like “Elements”, “Sparta”, “Tiger Blade” and even the latest bonus joint “H.T.G.” brings out the grittier side to this Emcee.

The PopCulturez review reflects on it, opening “he has something that many strictly battle-focused rappers lack; he can craft real songs too.” and in closing “Sure to please fans of 90s-style hardcore hip-hop from the likes of D.I.T.C., E offers his own take on the streets while demonstrating that, as an MC, he is not to be taken lightly.

SoulOnFire-FlavourMag

Leading UK online urban music, fashion and lifestyle publication Flavour Magazine took time out recently to speak with ethemadassassin, the hip hop MC currently based in Los Angeles but most associated with his native North Carolina.

Starting out in the 90’s based in cities such as Greensboro NC and Camden NJ, he started out coming up through the rap battle scenes, although it was his relatively short time on the mic compared to others that earned him his moniker. He went in for the kill, short & sweet, and one night a comment was heard “damn, that’s some mad assassin shit right there” and the name stuck.

Although the discography is relatively modest in comparison to others for an artist so long in the game – Soul on Fire being only his 3rd official studio album – this has been down to a variety of factors, the regular life trials & tribulations, the right producers to work with, moving from place to place, but it’s always worth the wait. He moved to LA in the last couple of years to team up again with his old partner in rhyme from NC Veteran Eye to form Veteran Assassins, so time has also been spent recording and touring as a group.

There is in fact a new Veteran Assassins album in the pipeline with significant production from Edinburgh’s Sci Fi Stu who who provided the beat for the killer track on the current album “80’s & 90’s”

London based journalist Taytula Burke jumped on the phone to E recently to speak on the new album and his time back in the day starting out and learning his craft. He speaks openly about his relationship with his parents and the impact that had and how his life changed when he took himself off to college and saw the comparison in life there to what he’d been accustomed to on the streets.

The album itself is very auto-biographical in nature and the interview goes more in depth into the background and what makes the man he is today. Read it all HERE

SoulonFire-SampleFace

The latest review of the new album Soul on Fire by ethemadassassin comes courtesy of UK online magazine SampleFace.

Afforded a 4/5 rating by reviewer Taytula Burke, on the beats and production she opens:

E curates beats from producers like SciFi Stu, Kyo Itachi, Wonder Boy and Gav Beats resulting in crazy guitar riffs, soulful vocal samples and jazzy piano keys being used as the soundtrack for a joyride through the mind of a veteran emcee.

The review is another to reflect well on E’s work on the mic with his “lyrical prowess” and subject matter, summarizing “this is an album worth having in your collection if you expect hip hop to have more than just rhyming couplets and a catchy hook.
