Shoe-icideHipHopDX

Long Beach crew Horseshoe Gang released their album “Anti-Trap Music” on April 29th, and within a week it entered the top 50 of iTunes’ charts in 15 countries.

From it was the single “Shoe-icide Squad”, the group’s savage verbal attack on police brutality against the black community, delivered with a ferocity that drew many to compare it to NWA’s “F*ck The Police”. The appropriately raucous beat is courtesy of Danish production duo Tabu (Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Tech N9ne)

With the recent events in Minnesota, Louisiana, Florida and now Canada taking place in the midst of political upheaval, the west coast rappers have put their full weight behind the Black Lives Matter movement by releasing this new official video, premiered by HIPHOP DX

Omerta-RhymeJunkie

East coast duo Constant Deviants released their new album “Omerta” on June 28th.

Their fifth official studio release following “Concrete Utopia”, “Amongst Friends”, “Diamond” and “Avant Garde” has a theme running throughout, inspired initially by M.I. and DJ Cutt’s respective Italian and Russian heritage, though other factors helped shape the overall concept.

Scottish writer Peter Johnstone took a listen and wrote a new feature on the album and the group for US online Rhyme Junkie :

Including the appraisal “it’s safe to say that Constant Deviants have produced another winner.” you can read the article in full HERE

Tomorrow the group will release their third single from the album “Reign Storms”, written by now Baltimore based rapper M.I. last year in the wake of the death of Freddie Gray at the hands of the local police. This obviously has a particular poignancy now given recent events.

Coincidentally, tomorrow is also the day that their album will be distributed to specialist stores worldwide in vinyl and Cd formats by Fatbeats Distribution. It is already available to buy in digital format direct from Six2Six Records HERE

Omerta-RapmaniaczReview

Baltimore MC M.I. and New Jersey producer DJ Cutt – aka Constant Deviants – released their fifth studio album “Omerta” on June 28th.

The duo who first formed while they were based in Brooklyn followed last year’s critically acclaimed “Avant Garde” by adding an additional twist with this year’s album, applying a theme throughout based on their respective Italian and Russian heritages.

The “mob” references are metaphorical, juxtaposing lifestyles by adopting the roles of Luciano and Lansky who shared their nationalities. A series of short stories demonstrate situations in a comparative way rather than the hackneyed “mafiosa rap” of the past.

The latest review to be published is by Italian online RapManiacz. Read what they have to say HERE

The album is available to buy as digital download direct from Six2Six Records HERE

This week, the album is being distributed by Fatbeats in CD and vinyl formats to specialist stores worldwide, so whether you’re in the States, Canada, UK, Europe, Japan or Australia, you’ll be able to get your hands on a copy in the next few days

Last Friday, M.I. and DJ Cutt from Constant Deviants dropped into Brooklyn’s Bodega Cold Kutz studio, the show streaming live every Friday from 5pm – 8pm EST.

DJ Joe Bodega spins the real deal when it comes to hip hop, assisted this week by DJ Toshi, and the show breaks for interview segments.

In this 30 minute interview with Constant Deviants (it begins 45 minutes into the show), hosts Jay Drilla and J2ThaMar cover a lot of interesting territory with the duo. First off they discuss the group’s earliest days, how they came together to form the group and how between 2000 – 2006 the group was on an effective hiatus.

MI2

This was due to M.I. signing a solo deal with Arista at the time, arranged by J Cole’s current manager Mark Pitts, while DJ Cutt engineered several albums for Roc-A-Fella. In this particular interview M.I. and Cutt go into far more detail than perhaps has been previously the case about the realities of life at these labels and the consequences it had for them.

In a similar vein, more specific information is provided regarding the circumstances around a 2006 remix of the Rick Ross track “Yup” which featured N.O.R.E. and M.I., but which was sent around djs incorrectly naming M1 from Dead Prez as the featured artist…just so this is cleared up once and for all !

CD1

Baltimore’s M.I. is then asked for his perspective on the riots in the city which took place in 2015 and he gives an interesting and informative perspective on the realities of what led up to these events and the extent to which it actually affected the city as a whole.

They also discuss a range of other subjects including the new album “Omerta”, the move into film making, the use of sampling and differentials in hip hop production, underground and mainstream hip hop and much more. Definitely worth a watch, check it out on Vimeo

Omerta” is being distributed by Fatbeats worldwide on CD and vinyl formats from July 15th, and the digital version can be bought now direct from Six2Six Records’ BANDCAMP
