NY State rapper & producer duo Tone Chop and Frost Gamble release their new EP on November 18th through Seven 13 Music & Entertainment.

“Veteran” is appropriately named as the pair were originally rap battle rivals in the 90’s before developing a partnership in tagging and rhyming. Having subsequently moved to Canada, Frost continued to contribute to Chop’s various projects though both pursue solo careers that have seen them work with J-Ro, Tom Gist, Sadat-X, Tahmell and Jinx Da Juvy.

The new release represents their first official collaboration together and is a little early taster of what’s to come in 2017.

The first review of the EP comes courtesy of the UK’s renowned long running publication Blues & Soul Magazine. READ THE ARTICLE ONLINE HERE

Baltimore rapper M.I. and New Jersey producer DJ Cutt – aka Constant Deviants – released their new album “Omerta” on June 28th this year.

They originally formed in Brooklyn and spent a week back in the area at the time of the release appearing on various radio stations promoting the new record. This time a themed release with metaphorical references to the mafiosa underworld, they adopted the roles of Luciano & Lansky in a series of sonic vignettes employing the traditional art of storytelling while retaining their trademark sound.

The most recent review appears on page 77 in the current issue of French printed publication Jazz News Magazine which is in stores now, and is included with coverage on an eclectic range of artists including Eric Clapton, Mndsgn and Brooklyn’s The Golden Grass. Omerta-StreetsConnect Part2

In the lead up to the release of the group’s fifth studio album “Omerta”, Baltimore rapper M.I. from Constant Deviants spoke at length to west coast online publication Streets Connect Magazine.

Part 1 of the interview was published recently, and in the second installment they discuss M.I.’s time spent signed to a solo deal with Arista and the issues he faced particularly in relation to the label’s suggested marketing strategy for him as an artist. This takes the conversation onto the wider subject of how white rappers were, and possibly still are, targeted at specific demographics.

An insight is given into M.I.’s earliest influences, and while several of the greats are acknowledged, he explains that the biggest factor in his development was found closer to home within Baltimore’s scene, and in particular the role played by Lab Tech 1.

MI

The subject switches to M.I.’s move into the world of film making as an actor, writer and producer, with his most recent movie “Six2Six” having just been screened at last week’s Hip Hop Film Festival in NYC, and the discussion develops further as he explains why he feels it is now less productive for independent artists to release official music videos.

The interview concludes with the announcement that Constant Deviants will perform in Colombia shortly, a territory they have found to be particularly supportive due to a strong vinyl market in line with the label’s policy of releasing in that format, a factor which has also established their presence in the UK, Europe and Australia

The overall interview is one of the most in-depth ever given by M.I., and can be read HERE

Shoe-icideHipHopDX

Long Beach crew Horseshoe Gang released their album “Anti-Trap Music” on April 29th, and within a week it entered the top 50 of iTunes’ charts in 15 countries.

From it was the single “Shoe-icide Squad”, the group’s savage verbal attack on police brutality against the black community, delivered with a ferocity that drew many to compare it to NWA’s “F*ck The Police”. The appropriately raucous beat is courtesy of Danish production duo Tabu (Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Tech N9ne)

With the recent events in Minnesota, Louisiana, Florida and now Canada taking place in the midst of political upheaval, the west coast rappers have put their full weight behind the Black Lives Matter movement by releasing this new official video, premiered by HIPHOP DX

HG11

Last week, Demetrius, Kenny and Julius from Horseshoe Gang dropped by the Inglewood studios of Homegrown Radio as guests of the HGR Live Show.

During the Long Beach group’s most in depth interview ever, they discussed a huge range of issues relating to the group directly and the wider world of hip hop and politics.

The interview began with the concept behind their album title “Anti-Trap Music” released earlier in April and their massive level of output over the years, including their Mixtape Monthly series which lasted a full year.

They explain this work ethic has its roots in a musical family background, and also explain their mother’s role in their education, the brothers never having attended public school and having often experienced homelessness.

IMG_1023

They discuss last year’s rap battle with Funk Volume, provide an insight to their upcoming new album “4 Brothers”, and address the wider subject of why they haven’t stepped into the rap battle arena or pursued solo projects.

A debate follows as to how rappers are rated, what defines a lyricist given the multitude of styles, and how aware a younger generation will be of anything not currently the staple diet of mainstream radio or clubland.

The conversation turns political, addressing recent high profile cases of police brutality and how the options available at the US elections might help, if at all.

With the interview drawing to a close, the studio addresses the recent VH1 Hip Hop Honors for Female Rappers before the group reveal they will appear as judges on a new tv talent show “One Shot” due to be shown on B.E.T. from August 23rd.

LISTEN BACK !

The group will be releasing a new video for “Shoe-icide Squad” – described as their version of NWA’s “Fuck the Police” – in the next few days. Connect with them on Facebook, Twitter & Instagram
