Well, it’s not often you get a genuinely good laugh doing this job, but just occasionally something turns up…..

Earlier this week, MC M.I. from Constant Deviants jumped on the phone with DJ D-Money, host of the weekly Fresh Juice Radio Show based out of Washington State.

The pair began by discussing the group’s new album “Omerta” which releases on June 28th, and then moved on to the rapper’s new additional focus of movie making. As co:owner of Six2Six Records, M.I. has become more involved in acting, film writing and film production, and has set up a new subsidiary Six2Six Films.

MI2

A new movie “Six2Six” will be screened at Ralph McDaniels’ Hip Hop Film Festival in NYC during August, and co:starring with M.I. is Treach (Naughty by Nature), Syleena Johnson and Chief Rocker Busy Bee. Some of the plot line is explained before the Baltimore MC reveals he is near completion of another new film, this time a comedy, called “Can’t Live Without My Radio”.

Then comes a regular section of the show where rappers play the radio version of the board game “What?”. Among the questions asked are “What do dogs think when owners dress them up in clothes?” and “What would you legalize?”

We’ll just leave that there and you can have a listen to what he says……enjoy…..

You can listen back to the whole show on Fresh Juice’s Mixcloud

You’ll be able to hear the pair on radio again when they’re in NYC during the last week of June at the time of the album’s release, appearing on stations including Sirius XM, Beatminerz Radio, Bodega Cold Kutz and Classic Storm. Meantime, keep up to date with news about Constant Deviants on twitter @Cnstnt_Dvnts (label @Six2SixShift) or over on their Facebook Page

ATM-BritishHipHop

London journalist Taytula Burke jumped on Skype recently to speak with west coast hip hop group Horseshoe Gang in the lead up to the release of their new album “Anti-Trap Music” out on April 29th through Seven 13 Music & Ent.

As part of a broader feature piece for the UK online BritishHipHop.com, the interview focused on the meaning behind the title and the wider issue of lyricial content prevelant in various forms of the genre.

As in previous interviews, the group acknowledge the role artists such as Kendrick Lamar and J Cole have played in bringing the art of lyricism back to the table, but here again explain that one or two individuals cannot do that, or represent a movement alone. The inference being greater unity between like minded artists to help “clean up the industry” on a far larger scale

It’s an ongoing debate in the world of hip hop generally, but what’s certainly true is that the various evolutions have created very specific markets, often territory to territory. Apples & oranges.

In this new exclusive interview, Stanley Florence from west coast online Raw Hip Hop Headz spoke with Long Beach crew Horseshoe Gang in the lead up to the release of their fourth studio album “Anti-Trap Music” on April 29th 2016

The group who are all blood brothers begin by talking about how their’s was a musical household as their mother and aunt were singers signed to a label in the 70’s. Subsequently, they explain how their initial steps towards becoming rappers were taken under the tutelage of their elder brother KXNG Crooked when from as early an age as 5 years old they were given rhymes to learn.

HG6

Influenced by artists including NWA, Tupac, Rakim and Jay-Z they speak about the advantage of having a special chemistry given their background and their aim to put more substance back into hip hop lyricism.

While acknowledging the role Kendrick Lamar and J Cole have played in re-establishing the craft, and indeed some who have helped bring the west back into focus, they explain more needs to be done, movements created, established and underground artists working together in unity to finally tip the scales.

The interview is then wrapped up as they discuss their tour with KXNG Crooked and Rittz last year, their well documented rap battle with Hopsin’s Funk Volume and of course, the album “Anti-Trap Music”.

West coast crew Horseshoe Gang are back with a new single, the third taken from their album “Anti-Trap Music” which releases on April 29th on Seven 13 Music & Entertainment.

In “Shoe-icide Squad” these lyrical marksmen use rhymes like bullets to address the increased number of young black men killed at the hands of the police. The evident rage in the delivery is understandable where black lives matter, and the neck breaking beat provided by Tabu (Kedrick Lamar, Aftermath) is the perfect backdrop with its classic G-Funk flavour.

CD-Hype

A few weeks ago, Emcee M.I. from Constant Deviants sat down with journalist Roberta Lampley, and the subsequent feature published in The Hype Magazine takes an in depth look into how the group operates in the greater context of life as an independent.

The duo released their fourth studio album “Avant Garde” on 12th May through Six2Six Records, a label M.I. co-owns and runs. The interview delves deeper into the group’s earlier days and touches upon their time with major labels Arista and Roc-A-Fella before returning to the independent fold and beginning their own label.

ConstantDeviants

They discuss their marketing strategy with a brand very much rooted in the traditional Golden Era but with a modern day approach, the rise in vinyl sales, the importance of physical product and how they developed an overseas presence particularly in Europe. The theme in the interview is the wealth of experience M.I. has from his two decades in hip hop having seen the industry on both sides of the Major / Indie coin. The knowledge is likely to be useful to all artists and labels starting up today.

They finish by talking about the new album, how it was devised and how it represents a duo with an almost symbiotic understanding of each other that produces, as the journalist writes, a feel from start to finish of “a cypher with your DJ, and the DJ kept changing the beats“.

For fans of Constant Deviants and those with an interest in the mechanics of operating as an independent artist or label in what would be classified as “real hip hop” today, the interview makes for excellent reading.
