New Interview – London’s hip hop Emcee & producer Iron Braydz speaks with God Is In The TV

British online music publication God is in the TV took time out recently to meet up with hip hop Emcee & producer Iron Braydz in London’s China Town ahead of the release of his new EP “Verbal sWARdz” which releases to the public on 14th April on his Unorthostract label.

Their writer Taytula Burke spoke with the rapper about the new release and his earliest days including his meeting with Wu Tang’s RZA, and reflects on the current UK and global hip hop scene

New Matt Maddox album Righteous Fury reviewed by Hip Hop Dependency

Ex Guerilla War Tactix member Matt Maddox, originally out of Long Beach California but now based in Kansas, released his sophomore album Righteous Fury on 25th February through Red Phone Records / Seven 13 Music.

The follow up to Asylum Artistry was a long time in the making and described by Maddox as his most personal to date. It also boasts features from Tragedy Khadafi, Adlib, Burke the Jurke, Reef the Lost Cauze and King Magnetic, with quality production courtesy of The Snowgoons’ Sicknature, C Lance of Jedi Mind Tricks, Nemesis, Skammadix, Vanderslice, Hellzwind, Engineer, Sultan Mir and the UK’s Edd Bundy. There is also turntablism throughout courtesy of fellow Red Phone labelmate DJ TMB.

The release has received an extensive level of coverage from publications around the world, the latest review published by Hip Hop Dependency in the United States

A full endorsement of the lyricism, rhymes & beats on display opens with “From the instant you hear the first cut. you are both engaged and threatened by what you hear….He has thrown ‘today’s hip hop’ on it’s head and as a listener you can not remove the headphones” as the review goes into the finer points behind the key elements of the release, before summarizing “Each thump of the snare and each phrase uttered is a constant reminder of what hip hop should be in this day and age. The new Matt Maddox album “Righteous Fury” is the highly anticipated follow up to his debut “Asylum Artistry” and releases Tuesday 25th February on Red Phone Records / Seven 13 Music.

It’s been a long time in the making but has enjoyed an impressive international media response, reflecting the skilled wordplay and powerful delivery of the Kansas based MC. The ex Guerilla War Tactix member has called on some well known names in the world of hip hop to join him on the album.

Producers including Nemesis, Skammadix, C Lance (Jedi Mind Tricks), Sicknature (Snowgoons), and Vanderslice have provided some neck breakin beats over which Maddox and featured artists such as Tragedy Khadafi, Reef the Lost Cauze, King Magnetic, Adlib and Burke the Jurke have delivered the lyrical fire. A healthy dose of quality turntablism is in effect throughout courtesy of fellow Red Phone labelmate DJ TMB.

Echoes Magazine & International Hip Hop France review Melanin 9 “Magna Carta”

In their end of year edition, legendary UK magazine Echoes have included a review of Melanin 9’s new album “Magna Carta” which released on 3rd December 2012.

“Recreating the claustrophobic climate of pre-millenial angst, Magna Carta could have snuck out in the late 90’s. To his credit, Melanin 9 never sounds like he’s having to try too hard” opens Sunil Chauhan’s analysis in an issue which also includes new releases by Homeboy Sandman, Ruff Sqwad, Kingdom of Fear, Lazy Habits, Kendrick Lamar, Jungle Brothers and Kool G Rap

Meanwhile, French magazine International Hip Hop hits stores in France from Tuesday 18th December, and we have a sneak preview of the reviews section which as well as covering Melanin 9’s album with a 90% rating, also features releases by Mystro, K-Def, Lord Finesse, Pace Won & Mr Green, Snowgoons and Blaq Poet.

Written in the French language (obviously), the Paris based publication lives up to its name covering hip hop from all over the world, and is produced on a monthly basis. A couple of weeks ago, Melanin 9 chopped it up with the UK’s online Rawroots to speak on the release of his debut album Magna Carta which can be bought now on iTunes.

He talks about his early days of deejaying, comin up in London and the early crews he worked with, working with producers Chemo, Beat Butcha, Jehst and Bronze Nazareth and plans on working with them in the future, the eclectic production on Magna Carta and his approach to the art of emceeing and lyricism.

MusicOMH Review Magna Carta by Melanin 9

Multi genre online publication Music OMH are the latest to review London’s Melanin 9 and his debut album “Magna Carta” which released on iTunes on Monday 3rd December.

Contributor Thomas May gives this a thorough examination, and a 4 star rating, opening with :

“On this record, Melanin 9 remains admirably committed to his belief in the potency of hip hop as a socially transformative art form”

Of course as an artist, Melanin 9 is heavily influenced by the ethos of hip hop during the Golden Era, although in this album applies a contemporary take for 2012, a point picked up by the magazine when they say “it is the lyrical dexterity and poise of delivery with which Melanin 9 presents his sentiment that elevates this record beyond mere social critique.”

His lyricism and wordplay have been his trademark since the days of his mixtapes “High Fidelity” and “144,000”, and as debut albums go, to quote MusicOMH is one which is “made only more striking by the knowledge that this is the artist’s debut“. With the ongoing throwback to the 90’s scene happening in the United States right now, it’s little surprise that Melanin 9 has been enjoying such a level of media attention internationally.
